Lowered Graphics Expectations #2
« on: January 05, 2004, 08:31:55 PM »
Sorry for the language but i am not native english.

I just read the other thread and the comments about other flight sim such as FA and would like to make one single comment about that.

I think I'm qualified to give my opinion since I have certain professional reasons to play all the main related simulators including AH, WB, FA, WW2OL, IL2, MOH ... i played/tested them all. I am very tired of hearing all the "we are good they are bad comments" between the different game communities. Ask the FA crowd what they think about AH and you get the same type of answers, very often from people that "used" to play the other game and try to come out as "experts". They all have their good and bad points, even AH. What's important is to play something that has a high fun-factor for you personally.

I do understand that this is an AH forum and without any doubt, my humble oppinion,  AH1 is one of the best (at this time) pure combat flight simulators but that depends on who you ask. You can not do a real apple-to-apple comparison between FA and AH as it attract different type of players. I like them both for different reasons. However if you do so i would say that FA offers a more differntiated game platform with better graphics (even compared to AH2) and strategic game play i.e. more choice as a player. AH offers a signifcantly larger and important "sim" community for people that likes realistic FM. FA do lacks the numbers in the advanced rooms for people that likes that, but it all depends on what you want and like. If you want realistic FM with more air without the hordes that is OK if not well AH is a very good choice. In the end it is the fun factor for you personally and what you like that state what is best and most fun for you.

The comment about the FA's userbase is wrong as it is actually growing. Maybe not incredible fast but believe me i know ( i am not a Jaleco employee). Jaleco also seems to have a solid marketing and development plan for the future as do HiTech. The WB crowd also seem willing to take up a serious fight with AH and do not forget the IL2's and WW2OL. An interesting question is how many WW2 "flight" related sims can coexists and what is the differentiators between them? Currently I would say that both WW2OL has the biggest growth rate but that changes from day to day. Given the situation and the recent price changes maybe WB has a big growth at the moment.

I always recomend people to try out the different games and see if you like it. A very good thing with competition is that most games offers either demo missions or free time to test the games. We as players can choose. I do fly FA advanced rooms now and then and i do not have the same experience with terrible lag but that is me. At the same time i, compared to many others, find the lvl-5 rooms to much arcadish for me but quite fun now and then.

At this point i am flying AH (waiting for AH2) and combine it with WW2OL for the land war. If I get burned out on WW2OL then fly AH , when ya get tired of AH I switch back to WW2. I will also starting to seriously test COD very soon. Saying that i do like WW2OL FM but not the plane set.

I think what most of us have in common is a love of WW2 history, computer games and playing with a massively multiplayer community, both AH and FA offer this in their own way. The "massively multiplayer" is a "big" drawback with the current Il2 implementation but they will eventually get there as well resulting in even more competition.

Which is better? I don't think that's a valid question since the answer depends on so many individual variables, I like many, I fly in AH, FA, IL2 and WB3 and am really good at the ground war in WW2OL, but again i have a professional reason to do all of them (and more).

I think bashing either game is petty and superficial and it only makes the one bashing look bad. All games have a vibrant community and dedicated developer/support.

Try it and make your own decision, getting an objective answer here is hard....

:aok

...and now i expect some serious flaming ;)

Haven't played the other ones except for Il-2.

Just didn't like it, so I didn't play anymore.

Aces High, however, I love.

Played FA for a long time. Got tired of the way M$ ran the game and held it down. Moved fully to AH after a long time of 1-2 months of it at a time. Only went back to FA as part of FA3 beta test group. Pointed out things that should have been done or bugs worked out and tried it about a year ago for three months and then a few months ago for a couple of weeks...Bottom line I like AH. The planeset may not be as large as FA but so what the overall single setup with 300-500+ at one time is amazing to fly in. Plus I like having CV capable aircraft only flying off CV's not having all aircraft available from CV's all the time. Just a personal preference here.

Thanks for the input as well.

I have to agree with Pooh ...
I was over in FA3.6 for the free two weeks over Xmas (hung out with some of my old fa1-2 squadie's)
First arena I hit was the FFA ... well expecting the worse i dive right in .. well its Blammmm , rinse and repeat blamm .. Darn spawn point campers .. (this is worse the uping a GV in tank town)

Ok now after my 1st game/pc freeze ... I jump into the Classic arena , grab my good old trusty Spitoon and I head off into SU land .... rut roo con 10 oc high (hmmmm outta icon range i should have time  ) think think level off get E up ... get ready for bounce .....  (ok i see em ... but no icon yet ..) ZOOOOOOOM BOOOOOOOOM  .... hell that was fast .... tnbing towards the ground on fire ... Lock up # 2 ... auurrrrrrrrrgghhhh !!!

Well I gave it a few days of flying ... even set FA3 up on my monster pc at work . (it didnt lock up as much but it was still too unrealistic and suffered from hard locks, lag on a T-1 connect)

They didnt really improve the Flight model at all over FA2 or the game engine its still laggy and warpy in the arena's the instant boom and zoom is worse then dodging 262's in AH all day . it was no real time or timing  in the game .

Now I beta tested FA 3 when it 1st came out ... (there's a reason MS washed there hands of the game and it went back to vr1 ... hmmmm )
I Also Was highly involved In FA2 .. I still miss ppp, kc, and death bowl alot (if you flew FA 2 in those events you would remember me, Same Id as here , and I was the master in those days)

As for player base in FA3 well i never saw more then 300-350 during primetime in the whole game .(theres almost that many in AH's h2h arena's here on the week ends )

now i could go on and compare the rest of the ww2 flight sims .. but why ... Ive played all the rest .... and i pay for the best .

Zman you would have better luck trying to lure the EA games player base , your not gonna get to many new FAers from AH WB or IL2/ FB .

I dont see much bashing here, so not quite sure what he is talking about.  His first post is to come in here and admonish us???   Coming in here to scold us about something he doesnt know much about makes him look less than brilliant.

I can barely remember anyone discussing WBs much, and most of the WW2OL stuff starts when they try and recruit here, and guys tell them exactly what they thought of the game.  Outside of that, most of the discussions about other games is pretty civil and objective.

he, he sorry if you got the impression that i am trying to lure people over to FA or other games, that was not the intention at all. I am so tired of the "normal" bashing of other games by people that do not really know enough or dont have enough experience to judge, you find it in every game, and wrote the post (my first) it in frustration even if it was not about AH specifcally.

Put it this way i dont even fly FA much at all, i fly AH (been a player for approx. 7 month) and also now doing serious testing of COD at the moment.

I dont claim to be an expert on AH specifically and quite frankly i dont care as long as i like it. It was a mistake to write this post.
