Geforce 4 ti4200 64 or 128mb for older system?
« on: May 31, 2003, 10:14:49 AM »
I'll start w/ my system specs

althlon t-bird 266 1ghz @1200 (150x8)
Iwill kk266+
384mb pc133 (@150)
geforce2mx 32 meg
17" NEC running 1024x768

This system still runs AH just fine, but it can't handle alot of newer games very well. I've got another 512mb of pc133 on the way.

I need to upgrade a bit withough spending alot of money. I don't do alot of gaming these days, but it would be nice if the ones I do play ran better.

I've been considering a ti4200, it seems like the best bang for the buck, and anything faster would be wasted money on my system. However, I can't decide on the 64 or 128 meg version. Being that my system is rather slow compared to the card, is there any advantage to getting it w/ 128? Or would I just be wasting a few extra bucks?

Money is kinda tight right now so I don't need to spend more than is needed.

A new graphics card in the mid range like you suggest would be an excellent idea. Go for it!:D

AH is a very system friendly game. My work machine is a celeron 800 with an old Geforce 2 GTS with 256Mb PC100 and I still occasionally play AH on it. 60-70 frames no probs

If I am not mistaken, the 64M version uses faster RAM.

I've got a dual P3-1000 with a Gf 4200 and it made a vast difference from the V5.

Stay away from the MX cards. The Gf FX cards are too new - and the FX 5200 is supposed to be not very good.

You won't go wrong with the Gf 4200 or the ATI Radeon 9700.

Furious is quite right.  The 128MB version of the Ti cards use slower ram.  ATI is the same way except for the 9700 and later cards.

The 5200FX card is not much faster than a GF2 card.  Your system can use more.

Bang for the buck would be the 9500Pro card, if you can find one.  The Ti4200 is a good choice as well.  Both would be fine for your system.

ti4200 really blew the line for me.  it nearly doubled my average frame rate as opposed to the 440mx.

ATI 8500 128Mb uses slower RAM?

My card is ATI retail with 275/275MHz clock speeds.

I am not the type to overclock, especially since this card performs well at the stock speeds.

The extra RAM is useful for image quality on the 8500. You can use higher levels of FSAA for a given resolution if you have 128Mb.

I play all of my games at 1600x1200x32 with very playable if not superior frame rates.

My only complaints are having to tweak the settings so much depending on which game I am playing and some compatibility issues that have been lingering despite ATI's frequently updated Catalyst drivers. Rage3D Tweaker generally solves both of those issues. I wish I had bought 2 more when I had the chance since the later 9100 versions are LE types with 250 and lower clock speeds and a new bios that has even more compatibility issues.
