"The Lone Buff" (Question/Suggestion)
« on: August 04, 2000, 10:03:00 AM »
This may sound kinda spoilt-brat, but please read thru before judging.

If anyone remembers the mood material stuff that I used to post on AGW, you'll recall that several of the stories dealt with Blenheim raids.

Is the Blenheim IV on the plane schedule? And there IS a good reason for asking...

The aircraft is well suited to 'lonewolf' bomber missions; people have been complaining about the tedium of flying a solo buff to drop 2 bombs and then RTBing. The solution isn't to try and implement clever 'make it more fun' mechanisms, or to increase bomb damage (which would then overpower larger bomber raids), but simply to implement a medium or light bomber.

The TBF and other similar aircraft filled this role in WB.

I'm not asking for the Blenheim to be added.  I am thrilled to little tiny bits that the lanc is coming our way.

Rather I thought this might be a useful observation.

RE: Spoiled Brat
I don't see anything bratesque here.
RE: Lancaster
I look forward to any new aircraft and am
especially interested to see how the Lancaster will fare in the sunlit world of the AH main.
RE: Light Bomber Need
Many appear to be successfully using the P47 as a light (or medium!) bomber and I see the B26 & Ju88 as both superior to the Blenheim in every way, so I don't imagine it
would see much use.   I think the Mosquito is a much better choice for a light bomber, especially given the current plane set.

Heh can't wait to shoot you down in your Lanc Ollie..just for old times sake of course

I used to get a big buzz out of using the Mosquito in WB, fast and fun with a norden. Always used to love watching them cons dissappear as I put my mossie into a shallow dive and rocketed off toward the horizon out of harms way

On the issue of bomb damage..I'd be happy for a more realistic norden without the current laser like accuracy and see carpet bombing introduced as a new skill in AH. Its the one thing thats always left me a bit cold about flying buffs..it feels great to be part of a large B17 formation but the immersion is lost when the FL dishes out specific targets such as individual acks to be hit with laser precision.

Pavel: I picked the Blennheim because it was a widely used aircraft for exactly the sort of sorties I was talking about; where there is a single bomber pilot wanting to make a quick raid.

If you grab one of the big buffs, you'll be spending a lot of time gaining alt or travelling...

And it's not about superiority of aircraft. I picked the blennheim because it has a ring of historical realism if it gets used as the 'what the buff drivers fly when they are alone and don't have 2 hours to drop just 5 bombs'.

Flying the big buffs is most effective when you have company - otherwise the round trip is painful for the payload. I wasn't thinking in terms of air power, I was thinking in terms of value per-flight-minute.

'The great thing about low flying was that it was always the aim to be as low as you could with safety, because it protected you from the guns, and from radar. It was exciting to be down among the trees, but the pilot had to be looking a long way ahead to see what he had to do next. Over Holland and the North German plain you could get very low indeed. Further inland, with the hills, not quite so low. You did see everything that was going on. We were navigating then with a map. Church steeples were great navigation aids at low level. If you had a map with churches on, the easiest way to navigate was by steeple.

'You could also see people - you could see cars, trucks, horses and carts. In hilly country we literally flew past someone's front door, and as we flew past I looked across over the wing tip and a man opened the door. I was looking him straight in the eye at about 40 feet. On one occasion in the flat country of Northern Germany we were flying very low across some open fields with very few trees, and there was a farmer with his horse and cart coming towards us. We were down deliberately low; I doubt if 10 or 20 feet would be an exaggeration. As we got close the horse reared up and threw the man off the cart before we went over. We were that close to people.

'Low flying in itself was not dangerous. We were flying in a Blenheim, cruising at 180mph. That's slow - you've got time to see trees, even high-tension cables. I've known people clip the target by being a few feet too low, but that was unusual. Occasionally somebody came back with a piece of tree.

'Now night low level was different. That really was dangerous if you got a bit too low, and people sometimes did. We had one night when we were attacking shipping in the Channel at full moon. One Blenheim came back and landed and the pilot asked us to come and look at it.

 '"What happened?" we said.

'"Well, I saw a ship so I bombed it and hit it," he said, "I pulled up over the mast and I dropped down the other side. There was another ship there I hadn't seen, so I went through his mast."

'When we got out to the aeroplane we found that the propeller hadn't hit the mast, but the engine had collected a piece of wood that was burning gently against the cylinders.'

I'd personally prefer a Beaufighter or a Mosquito, or obviously both!  Although I do like the Blenheim, I don't think it would stand a chance in the MA, though would be really good for a HA.

I have the perfect Buff for you guys

Check out the P1Y "Frances", a Japanese Medium bomber.

The P1Y3 varient is a 340 mph bomber, and it carries 20mm cannons as defensive armament in a nose and dorsal position, with a 1,600 kg bomb load (approx. 3,500lbs)

Think of the Mossie with lethal defensive guns   Of course it has those silly meatballs on the wings, but you can't have everything

I still find the Blenheim unsuited for the late war planeset currently available, even if it was historically employed for single A/C missions.  I'm all for a greater variety of bombers and think any of (Beaufighter, Mosquito, Frances, A20/26) would be useful in the main arena.

I agree with Revvin regarding immersion and have some hopes the terrain editor will lead to an increased interest in scenarios and historical rather than comical missions.

After the Ju 88A-4 and Lancaster Mk III, the Yokosuka P1Y "Frances" would be a good choice. It fills two voids: Fast medium bomber, and Japanese bomber. After that comes a Tu-2 or Pe-2, and a S.M.79 and everyone's happy.

While the Blenheim is an important RAF aircraft for early-war scenarios - as an arena aircraft it would suck, even vs 1939 opposition.
