An example of the horrors of war
« on: June 01, 2003, 07:07:08 AM »
I'm reading a book Nimitz left at the house,  "An Army at Dawn" by Rick Atkinson.

The book opens with the Allied invasion  (US/Brit) of Algeria.

In the naval battle at Casablanca between the Allies and Vichy France, a French cruiser (Primauguet) gets the worst of several exchanges.  The ship is holed and  on fire.  There are wounded men all over the deck.

Some frightened pigs escaped from a pen in the hold and attacked the wounded men.

If you're a farm boy, you know there is one animal you don't fool around with - a frightened or angry pig.  They are well-armed (teeth) and extremely powerful and clever animals.  I cannot imagine the sheer horror of the situation.

The need to fear pigs, and their keepers, is well documented in recent films.  Hannibal springs to mind, but I like this quote from Snatch:

"You need at least sixteen pigs to finish the job in one sitting, so be wary of any man who keeps a pig farm. They will go through a body that weighs 200 pounds in about eight minutes. That means that a single pig can consume two pounds of uncooked flesh every minute. Hence the expression, "as greedy as a pig.""
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain

Snatch...

One of the funniest movies ever...

My favorite part is when Brad Pitt says: "Why would I want that caravan? It's got no wheels!"

Say, there have been horror movies about killer bees, and sharks, and bears, and even killer worms, but have we seen a good horror flick about a pack of maniacal pigs?  I, for one, think it's time!  :D

when I lived in the mid-west I knew quite a few guys who raised hogs for a living (some family).  just about every one of them had a few scars on their legs from bites.

Spent time on hog farm

Uncle was hog farmer when I was kid.  Used to "cut" the boar piglets every year.  I always got to "help"

Absolutley nothing more viscious than a mad sow with it's piglet wailiing away.  Watched my uncle hit one on the snout ten times with a ball peen hammer to get her off him.

I think they should make a film of Animal  Farm or Poul Anderson's Brain Wave!  That woudl be awesome.

Let's all agree that having a pig pen on a cruiser is a bad idea.
