Boeing YP-29
Correct, and that arrowhead on the aft fuselage indicates that this aircraft was being tested at Wright Field at the time of the photo. Originally, the XP-29 was a single seat fighter. However, the USAAC insisted upon a two man crew and Boeing redesigned it as the YP-29. Later, the YP-29B reverted to single seat configuration. With a cantilever wing and flush retracting landing gear the Boeing was very advanced for its day. The Army Air Corps, well into its between the wars stupor, never placed an order, even requiring Boeing to fund development. It was this thinking that led to the US entering the war with many obsolecent aircraft in service.
