dual boot?
« on: June 03, 2003, 07:55:42 AM »

My upgrade part arrive tomorrow (yah!!) :D and as I'm going to start from scratch on my OS, I figgered I might as well get the HDD set up for a dual boot for WIN XP pro.

I currently have my 60 GB HHD partitioned into 3 drives.  Is it possible to partition a partition without affecting the other two?  I've got a 10 GB for the OS, then two 25 GB partions for games/applications.

I'd like to just split the 10 GB into 2 5 GBS for win98 and XP pro (when I get it).  Is this possible or do I have to start from scratch on the whole HDD.

thanks!!

my suggestion is to pick up another drive, set as slave and install XP on it in NTSF format - you'll have to re-install any program you want to use in XP anyway

Uhggg!  You mean if I boot up into win98 and install something, the next time I boot into XP, that program wouldn't run unless I reinstall it under XP?

Lemme guess, its a registry thing isn't it.   Fuggin MS :D

Maybe I should get get XP and forget the dual boot.  I'm starting to hate computers again.

That's right.
Sometimes it'll work if you install proggies twice in the same folder, first from one OS and another time from other OS.
Some programs which doesn't make changes to registry may work without even doing that, just locate the EXE and try if proggie works.

btw if I was you I'd clean one of those 25gb partitions and the I would install XP on that one and format it to NTFS when installing.

Another way would be split that 10gb partition to two with "Partition Magic" (maybe make it larger with same proggie by taking space from those two other partitions).

and remember

NTFS is a better file system but Win98 can't see it..

You'd be able to see Win98 files from XP but not XP files from Win98
