Yep he threw a rod.

Scientific answer:
Its caused  by lack of lubrication along the rods bearing journals and due increase of friction amplifying the extra load along the rods length caused by forces imposed against it at higher RPMs. Perhaps some rod stretching as well and a piston against the combustion chamber/valves thus breaking the rod.

:D

Maybe they saw a pre-screening of "2 Fast, 2 Furious?"

Guess Daddy will have to buy another car.

Looks like he got 2nd instead of 4th.  Those Honda joystick boxes are nice and smooth, but a little too smooth.  On a lot of cars you wouldn't even be able to get it into 2nd at that speed.  But his went right in...  Blammo.  Looked like the camera man almost hit his head on the dash.

Yep, I'd say thats what happened, looks like that needle went all the way around back to zero too  after he blew it. A "360" if you will...:)

Funked, I prefer to refer to it as "The semi-swift and slightly miffed."

Oh what a strange world we live in - marketing based even - gotta hand it to the advertisers - they've convinced an entire generation that a 150HP economy car with a 747 wing is faster than an F16.

Funked is dead right.

A rev limiter typically cuts the ignition when you hit it and immediately turns off again, that's why when you hit the rev limiter the engine "bounces" off it.

When he shifted to 2nd the engine immediately tried to rev up to the same speed (factoring in gear ratio) as the wheels, it's the cars inertia causing this even though there's engine braking (the camera man hitting the dash is evidence of just how much engine braking there was).  Ignition has naff all to do with it at this point.
