Or what you say on this? :)

FiaF Morane-Saulnier 406, after air combat 25.5.1944. Plane landed normally to its home field.

French made ;)

I personnaly prefer the look of the Dewoitine D520 but the MS406 has known a better success.

Steel tube/fabric vs. "stressed skin"

That is an impressive series of photos.  I wonder if the skin damage was done by the initial round or was done by the airstream afterwards? My thought is "afterwards", since there's not a lot of skin hanging around the hole that I can see in the photo.  It looks like it came away at a sewn seam.

This does show that the structure survived intact.  If that were an aluminum plane, I don't think there would have been much strength left after the skin ripped away.

You don't actually have anything intelligent to say by chance, 0Drag, do you? Just wondering the IQ level of some posters...

It wasn't for captain Turkki, flying 1938 gear in combat in 1944. As you can see from the pictures.

You are right about that on G.  I would imagine that was a long, and harrowing, ride home...I am a pilot as well and even something as mild as a whiff of smoke can turn a lovely days ride into a long, nervous few moments.
