Have both assigned to trigger...... except in mode 3 (which for me is bomber mode)... this way I can shoot MG without dropping bombs.... sec fire key is also the launch key.... for bombs..

I have primary and secondary both mapped to the trigger too, but I have also programmed the primary and secondary buttons separately so I can fire each one independent of the other.  I have the primary guns set to the little red button on the front (push with index finger), which allows me to de-ack fields without using cannons.  The Secondary guns or cannons are mapped to the launch button under the protective cover on the top of the stick.  I took someone else’s advice and simply put a piece of sponge under the lid so that I press the cover and it depresses the button.  That little red button was too small anyway.  Hope that helps.

As a follow-up, what does everyone use the rotary buttons for?  At one point I had them mapped for throttle engines 1 and 2 so I could do some fancy flying in P38's, but never got used to it, and now they are completely unmapped.

Grabbing the stick in a way that the index finger presses the red one in the front might not be a bad idea, considering that the stick would be just a bit too small if I hadn't removed the pinie switch cap.
Though mapping in that way i think i'd rather put the primary guns on the small red and the cannons on trigger.

I have aux0 mapped to select engine one, aux1 to select both engines and aux2 to select engine 2. works nice, just the latest config too can't do that (can't map aux0 to report as joystick button aux0...). The mode switch I don't use at all - I can't get the profiler to set it to send joystick buttons, only keyboard strokes, which is crap ihmo, they might end up in the chat bar and I can't press more than 3 buttons at the same time.

I have the trigger setup to fire primary only in normal operation and both when I hold the pinkie switch in. Secondary only is mapped to button A.

As for the rotary knobs, I have #2 setup to select eng #1 or #2 depending on which way I turn it. Like tracerx I envisioned doing all manner of tricky manuevers in my P-38 but in practice it was just distracting and not very intuitive. I never use it. Knob #1 however is setup as my rudder control as I found the rocker-rudder more akin to some sort of torture device. I have flaps mapped to the rocker now and the ache in my left hand mysteriously disappeared. :D

Great Idea with the rudder Dbltrubl.  I might never have thought of that.  I am still having a hard time getting used to the rudder action on the throttle stick.

ccvi,

I am not holding the stick any different than normal.  There are two small red buttons on the X45.  One on top under the launch cap I press with my thumb and is maped to secondary guns.  The other is on the front side just above where your index finger normally rests.  This one I maped to Primary guns so I can fire them without using the cannons.  I like to fire primary only when trying to force runners to turn, and when de-acking a field.  The secondary switch is usually only used when bombing, or jabo since I usually fire cannons and primary togeather with the normal trigger.

Right now I have both set for trigger and secondary to the "little red button":)...(perfect for jug or other US Iron). When I'm flying other stuff I'll adjust on climb out. In Spit V I'll map 20mm to trigger and the .303's to the red button. I tend to T&B everything so the two yellow buttons are flaps up and down. I've got my "up view" mapped to the pinkie switch so that free's up the 2nd hat and I'll map to there sometimes...right now have map, dive brake, damage and chk 6 mapped but I've occasionally mapped sec or primary weapon their as well.

Of course in la-7 it doesnt matter :)

I thought "normal" was to put the index finger on the trigger, and the rest of the fingers around the stick. I removed the pinkie hub cap so the 5th finger can rest down there. At least that explains why my thumb is too short to reach the launch button :) That there aren't many fingers left to control the stick - thumb on the buttons at the top, index finger in the front, 3rd finger at the trigger, just two small weak fingers left for the stick.

I have my trigger set up so that if I pull it a little, it fires primary and if I pull it all the way it fires both.

Yeah, that sounds right ccvi, I must have been interpreting what you said earlier incorrectly.  I use the "normal" grip 80-90% of the time, and slide my grip up only when I want to fire primary alone.  That way I don't have too many problems holding on to the stick.

I see why you removed the pinkie switch.  I also find that pinkie button annoying sometimes, but I use it for the gun zoom so it doesn't bother me much if I accidentally hit it.

of the three buttons on the top (the 1 with the flip lid in the middle) i have the left button mapped as "fire secondary"

my middle button (lid has been removed) is "select secondary weapon"

the right button is "gun zoom"

that tiny red button on the front you cant see is "toggle combat trim"

somone asked about the rotaries?

i have mine set for elevator trim ad move head side to side
I don't know what to put here yet.
