I got a new problem with Internet explorer 6,when browsing and a new window opens either by me or the page I was viewing,when I try to get rid of any of the pages by clicking on the little 'x' at top right,it doesnt work,and Im stuck with it all,I have to close it all by Windows task manager,any1 got any ideas how I can fix this or the cause? Im runnin XP home edition and tearin me hair out over this...even though I aint got any....

First, quit letting the sheep drive your computer.

Ok,..Joc, these are applets that are running from being at various sites, and/or you have Messenger running in the Services for XP list, which allows any remote bad guy to pop-up stuff whenever they feel like it.

It could be a virus as well.

To absolutely kill these guys, you can turn off java in IE, or at least you used to. I don't use IE6.

I have never had this problem, and really do not know how others manage to get them.

Pry to use Alt+F4 iits works well for me with all those Pop Ups or use a pop up stopper programm.

Use Ad-Aware and Spybot to get rid of any spyware .dlls.

It's best to use both programs because Ad-aware detects some spyware that Spybot doesn't and Spybot detects others that Ad-aware doesn't.

You can also go to MajorGeeks and look for a program called "Hijack This" which hunts for registry entries that hijack your browser.

Oh, and stop downloading all that sheep porn.

best bet is to just use a alternative browser...k-meleon is good...opera mozilla and netscape are all really annoying to me...

I am also using IE6 and have had problems with it. It starts out ok but then later degrades and won't allow certain processes to open. The best example is the adde\ress book in Yahoo mail. I can't select the address' I want anymore as that window won't open fully. I find that secondary windows such as a link posted in this bbs won't open either. I have had to delete IE6 and revert to IE 5.5 but that has problems now as well.

This has happened 3 times in the last 6 months. The only solution is a reformat and reload all software. The only real feature I like about IE6 is the cookie handling where I can specify to block cookies from specific sources.

Oh and I am using win 98SE

Use the add/remove software applet in the control panel, IE 6 has a repair option.

Choose the IE 6 Tools drop down menu to access the java controls.

For some reason that I haven't been able quite figure out, IE tends to lose its encoding settings and it sets it at either Western European (ISO) or Unicode. When it does that, links don't work, images won't properly load and a host of other problems. I have to then click on View, scroll down to Encoding and make sure that Western European (Windows) is checked, if it isn't I have to check it. IE seems to do it if I've had the computer running all day without rebooting. Happens to my home PC as well as my workstation PC.

I had problems with active scripting, ended up getting a HTML virus into my systed, and eventually the HD had to be reformatted.
Bloody explorer I thought and downloaded opera.
Recommend it, - works like a dream. And I'm not getting any popups any more!

I have IE6 running in Win98. As soon as I loaded it, problems started occuring. Most notably is the "Illegal Action has occured" and crash of Explorer. Just 1 baby step short of BSOD.

Takes a LONG time to D/L those updates on a dial up.

Tried the repair option, no dice. Treid uninstalling it, defragging then reloading a day or so later, no change in errors. When I revert back to IE5.5 it's porked a bit as well.

Tools indicates western Euro option selected. sigh
