just a poll how long you  think hes used it,since slump or for yrs i say for yrs when hes in a slump!!!!

The hell with all that... Does the MLB have any proof at all that there is a benefit to corking? From what I've read, the players don't necessarily agree.

Just like the MLB players say there's no real benefit for using steroids.  A load of crap.  

A corked bat lessens the weight of the bat which means a stronger swing and for power hitters like Sosa, the more powerful the swing the better chance of a home run.

Do I think he by accident picked up the wrong bat?  Hell no, I think he fully knew what he was doing but didn't think he'd bust his bat open.  The guy is in a slump, especially after his injuries in April where he got hit in the head and hurt his toe on top of a lackluster performance so far this season.  I'm sure his sponsors were breathing down his neck for him to produce which was probably one of the reasons why he used a corked bat.  And the fact Sosa is also one of the steroid poppers in the MLB, it's not really hard to imagine him doing something like this.

I really could care less about anything baseball but really, if there's no benefit, then what's the point of having one in the first place?  Do they have some other practical use?

come now SOB... admit you only read this thread cause you thought the title meant something else.

As for the benifits of a corked bat... Sosa claims he used his for batting practice because the fans liked to see him hit home runs.  For some reason... that doesn't fit in with the "it doesn't help him hit home runs" argument.

The ball will carry an extra ten to twenty feet with a corked bat. (Actually cutting up Super Balls works better than cork.) If it didn't help nobody would risk the suspension.

Sosa is one of many in major league sports who is juiced up on steroids. He weighed 185 when he was with the White Sox and now he weighs bout 250. Barry Bonds did steroids to bulk up too. It's not that uncommon any more, all you have to do is look to see who's put on twenty pounds of muscle during the offseason and it's a sure bet that player is juiced because there's no way someone could gain 20 pounds of muscle just by working out.

If you are caught, your bats are confiscated. Knowing this, they will have one corked bat and the rest will be regular. If you are somehow caught, the rest of the bats will be examined to find they are not corked, so you can use the argument  " I use that for BP or homerun derby and it got mixed in with the regular bats". They can't prove otherwise. To solve this problem, they should not allow a corked bat in a major league park on days of an official game, and if you are caught with one it's a season ending suspension.

I think Sammy usually does not used a corked bat.  The risk of detction normally is too great - how many bats a season does he break?  I also think he probably DOES use one for batting practice and home run derbies, and that doesn't bother me either.  The problem is, knowing that the corked bat is available, how do you resist the temptation when you are up in the 9th inning, trailing by two with a runner on first base...  By saying, well maybe I'll use it JUST THIS ONCE...

It's a slippery slope.  I know I would give in to the temptation.

So I think you need to throw the book at him and suspend him for the season.  THAT will make people think twice

(On an unrelated topic, I guess cheating is not as bad as gambling :) )

As far as I know, officially sanctioned MLB home run derbies don't allow corked bats either.  And if a power hitter like Sosa needs a corked bat to hit a fat pitch in a home run derby, no friggin' wonder why he's taking steroids as well.  

I just find this "it was for practice but got mixed up..." excuse to be a load of crap.  But of course Sosa is going to come up with a myriad of excuses since he doesn't want to lose his millions in sponsorship contracts.  Oh well, I guess has-beens need all the help they can get, even if it means cheating.
