Texture loading size in ref to Frame Rate?
« on: November 22, 2004, 07:03:06 PM »
Does lowering the  texture load size load  a more simplified set of  more basic graphics textures or just less of a normal set with a corresponding increase in Hard Drive accessing to continually update the set as you fly.
As you might guess, I'm trying to improve poor frame rate.

At the moment I'm running the 1024 set loaded into RAM rather than video ram.  Im getting average frame rates in the 30's and up to low 50's in clear sky  that dip down below 20 when I attempt to use Ground view for Vehicle hunting.

I've tried the 512 set loaded into either RAM or Video ram and noticed that the FR goes up but fluctuates alot more depending on the view. At those critical slow spots in a thick furball or groundhunting that pesky Panzer it doesnt seem any faster than the original 1024 text set I had loaded into RAM.

I was wondering about increasing aperture size from 64 to the other setting <256> and trying to even load a smaller text set into RAM.

btw....it's a Gateway 1.8 GHZ Pent 4 with 512 Meg of RAMBuss Ram.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

PS  ..yes I'm adjusting my F-view constantly  and closing down all the non needed services and making all of the performance over quality choices I can make both ingame and out before logging in.  Fresh Defrag every couple of days.

Thanks in advance

Upgrading to 1GB of RAM would boost your performance more than any setting in the world.  In the meantime, open up your AGP Aperture larger than 64, I bet you see a diff.

Lute, I have 2 old 32MB PC100 sticks someone could use for .......... well I'm sure there's something they would be good for.  I kept em for backups on an old 200 mhz K6 machine I'm running Apache on, but I really wouldnt cry if someone needed em and I had to part with them.  No charge even.  (Wife tryin to get me to clean up the office at home lol).  I also have 2 - 128 MB PC 133 sticks I'm not using anymore, and dont plan on using.  Just let me know if you can use them.

Wow! boy am I ever!!  Unfort, I'm quite poor due to a greedy ex-wife and over $50,000 in attorney fee's i've paid out to date.  If I had the 100.00, I would grab a couple 128mb's from newegg, or pricewatch.  I requested the 64mb's, or 128mb's hoping someone would just have them laying about and not needing them and feeling charitable (t'is the season you know).

Let me know what you are thinking.

Frame rate, per se, is effected by the size of the textures based on how much swapping of textures will occur to display any given frame.
The larger the texture sizes, the more the card *may* have to swap out textures, thus possibly causing stutters and momentary frame rate drops.
