Trouble with Terrain Editor (still)
« on: June 08, 2003, 11:35:09 AM »
I still cannot see any outline or other references in the map window when I open the file I created in TE.  By default it wants an *.oba file which I can find in my created folder.  I have even tried changing the file type to "all" and opening the bmp in the same folder.  It will open thatas well, but still I see just open water with no references.

After receiving replys from my first post on the subject, I looked at the items I was suggested.  My bmp is in fact 256 colors.  I could not find a folder or file anywhere named "texscr".

The help file says nothing regarding the line width, color, if it should just be an outline or filled in with solid color, or anything about how the bmp should be formatted.  I just did an outline scketch of the map I want.  Am I doing something wrong here?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Lol all these problems sound so familiar.

1. slow down

2. create a picture of your terrain via paintbrush,or your favorite paint tool. it must be created using grayscale color pallette. name it 'noobie.bmp'

3. open TE

4. create a new map (1024X1024) name it 'noobie'

5. close TE

6. create a new folder in the map folder you just made named 'texsrc'
   i.e c:\program files\htc\editor\terrains\noobie\texsrc

7. copy your 256 color(indexed) terrain to the texsrc folder

8. use the bmp2map tool (I dont like the build in converter) to import elevations and tiles from the terrain image

9. copy any custom tiles you plan to use into the texsrc folder

10. run TE  and your ready to go.

the hard park is just figuring our how to start. the rest is all legwork. good luck.

Doody pretty much has it: Slow down.

The big part is you're assuming the TE does things that it doesn't. Making an initial map plan and getting it to show in the lower right of the TE serves one purpose only and thats to serve as a plan as you build your map.

The TE won't actually create any of the map from this picture.

AKbmp2map will to a certain extent do quite a bit of the hard work for you. It'll do elevations and create automatic tile assignments by altitude, it's not brilliant but its the best we have at the moment. From you plan picture you need to create a 1024x1024 greyscale elevation map where white=high and black=sea level. Feed that into bmp2map and it'll create the bulk of you map for you. Pokie has it hosted on his site I believe, read the readme file that comes with it and look at the sample image. It's fairly straight forward from there.

Thanks Doody & Gatso for the input.  I wasn't familiar with the bmp2map program.  I found it on pokie's site and downloaded it.  If I have any more trouble getting going, I'll post another thread.

By the way how "high" is "high" when you use 255,255,255?  (altitude I mean)

Varible, open the bmp2map and you would see a max alt box.

Btw, why doesn't anyone like the inbuilt thingy?
