Engine Pitch
« on: August 06, 2000, 11:02:00 AM »
I've checked in tried and AH a couple of times in the past year, and while there are many things I love about this sim, there is one "small" thing that makes be decide against doing it full time.  The lack of change in engine pitch, as the plane increases/decreases in speed.  I understand that apparently in RL this is the case, but in a virtual environment I find I need this or something to get a sensation of speed, especially at higher altitudes. I've talked to others who feel the same, they just don't get the sensation of speed they get in other sims.  Was there a decision to do it this way, or is it something to be addressed in the future?

turn up your wind speed vol.

Agree with Camel(hi bud ).I actually turned ALL the rest of the sounds down  abut 50% and cranked the wind sound.Very good for helping judge speed and adds to immersion for me also.Nothing like the sound of air blasting past the canopy.

Hey Yowser,

There have been a number of really good discussions of constant speed props on this BBS and they explained pretty well why you don't get the engine pitch change - it's because you do get a prop pitch change. Check the past topics and hopefully one should still be up.

Constant speed props hold a constant engine RPM as long as they are in regulation. Basically if you nose over in a dive, the prop pitch will increase so that the engine doesn't unload and race up in RPM. Same thing when you go into a climb - the pitch will decrease so that it effectively shifts to a lower gear and the extra load doesn't bog the engine down.

About the only thing that does change would be the wind speed. Since you are setting manifold pressure (essentially power) with the throttle, the engine will always sound the same at a given RPM and power setting.

If you are out of WEP you can experiment a bit with the constant speed settings by using the + and - keys on the keypad. Fewer RPMs will get you increased gas mileage and also change the engine speed (by definition) and thus pitch.

What Renfield said

Engine screaming in dives is an Hollywood trick to make the diving more intense for the spectator.

Oh I dunno about that...ever seen what happens when a Curtiss prop runs away on a 38?

Also, isn't it true that if in a dive, where the speed excedes the amount of pitch needed to regulate the engine, the engine will over rev?

Engine noise is the only reason you don't fly AH full time???  Like was already said, turn up the wind sound...that should give you a good indication buddy!  I just pay good attention to my airspeed when I'm in a steep dive.

I realize what I'm asking for is "hollywood", I just think that until "virtual reality" is here, I think you have to make certain concessions to allow for immersion with today's computer systems.
Anyways, I'll definitely try increasing the wind, I didn't realize it was available..thanks for the tip.
