Stupid pop ups
« on: June 09, 2003, 11:58:42 PM »
Guys
I know this prolly has been asked a bunch, but here goes

Fresh install of XP pro and no browser open, I open any game including AH and about 10 minutes later I will get dumped to the desktop and low and behold 10 or more IE windows are open with all kinds of popups... I have gone to MS config and killed everything.

I think I killed messager, this is driving me nutty.

Any ideas?

Try  Ad-Aware .  Run it now and them to clean up all the nasty things you pick up on the web.

gto in your othere online help thread i gave a reponce too,,,to stop your pop ups,,you need to find and download a spywear detector,,like from spywear.com,,or globalgeek,,,,my buddy had the some problem,,and we couldnt get rid of it,,,every time he was playing stupid advertisments would pop up in the middle of game play,,tons of them,,just like you discribed,,,,we downloaded spywear detector,,and it got rid of all the pop ups,,and got rid of the spy files that are loaded deep into your computer,,,only one of these type of programs till fix your proublem

just type in sypewear in your browser and it will pop up with plenty of free ones  and trial version,,you need to clean them out,,you are being hacked in a way by computer companies,,they are watching were you go and what time to send you pop ups,,hehe,,you will be amazed how many things it will find in your computer that you never loaded,,lol

like i said,,every 10min he would have pop ups,,,,he gots windows xp too,,and spywear detector fixed him up good

This happened to me, and this is how I got rid of "them" (notice plural).  Iused adware, but it did noit find the cuprits.  Even so, adware is a good product and worthy of the free download.  I downloaded zone alarm and installed it. I didnt allow anything on my computer access to the internet from the initial install.  This means that everything on my PC had to go through the firewall and I would be notified each time.  Evertime I would allow whatever was tryign to get out to go, and I woiuld then watch for a popup.  If the culptrit is found, I then can find out exactly what the .exe is and which directory it is located.  Likely, you downloaded something shady and it was bundled with it (porn maybe?).  I repeated this until no more popups came up.  Turns out, I had "6" pieces of spyware on my PC in various directories that would periodically send out a ping to some advertising server on the internet and it resulted in an unwanted popup on my screen.

in a task manager window try to look for any suspicious process (application)... then kill. Now be carefull 'cuz we don't want you to crash the system! IF you found THAT thing and you can play more then 10mins without CTD look fdor what you've killed in the system registery keys (regedit) and delete all you found that's connected with this app.

DO NOT delete anything if you are not sure what are you doing tho

Are they MS Messenger ads?   I started receiving direct port pop ups, not the messenger ones,  so I just activated my firewall.  I haven't had one since.
