Got into a GREAT fite with Nikoli earlier today with him in his Zeke.  Lemme tell ya, that Yak handles like a dream!  Lack of WEP doesnt seem to be an issue as its got lots of power to spare.

Was able to keep the fite verticle and deny the slow climbing Zeke any shot of shot.

Only problem with the Yak is that the armament sucks.  I got good hits and spent half my ammo on the Zeke and it didnt go down

Oh well, maybe I can chalk it up to a problem with the Internet!  <S> Nikoli!

That fite was fun while we were connected!

PS...Yup edited the message to state that its the YAK's armament that sucks..not the Zekes.

You mean the Yak's armament sucks. right? I wouldn't expect the A6M5b to die quickly, it had upgraded armor with fire extinguishers in the fuel tanks and an armored windscreen.

Hi Yak experts!

I need to know the following :

How does the Yak turn compared to the p51 we have in AH?

How much faster is the Yak compared to the p51 we have in AH?

How is the Yaks climb compared to the p51 we have in AH?

How is the Yaks dive compared to the p51 we have in AH?

I have no clue about the Yak as you can see hehe

Regards.

Well, I dont know the figures but in WB's the Yak-3 was trouble for the pony. It will outclimb and outroll the pony, topspeed is close but the pony still has that advantage. Turnrate overall goes to the yak. The biggest weakness for the yak is its ammo load and its fuel capacity.

Checkout the yak in my signature--its a Yak-9D

51 is faster than the Yak at all altitudes.

The Yak climbs to 16k in 3 minutes 48 seconds. (historically with VK 107A)Nuff said.

Yak reaches speed quicker in a dive but 51 high speed handling is better.

So if the Yak is slower than the 51 at all altitudes, it should be slower than the Typhoon under about 12k?

About half an hour ago I was flying level 8k in my trusty Tiffie and had a flypast from a Yak at 9k going in the exact opposite direction. I hit the WEP, staying dead straight, looked back 2 minutes later and he was dead on my 6, gaining - got a bit whiny after that I'm afraid to say. Maybe I was just too heavy on fuel - can the Tiffie still hold its own at low level? Or does the Yak outperform it?

Did a little speed testing - 10k, from equal speed 50% fuel to full power (Yak), WEP (Tiffie), Yak pulled ahead by a good 10-20mph I'd guess. That's not a great deal, so I guess I cried wolf a bit - the yak I ran into must have been very low on fuel or something. I'm sure I'll find out sea level comparison in good time...

There were 2 versions of the Yak9U:

1) The first 9Us were powered by the VK105PF-3, very weak engine carried over from the -9D.

2) From August 1944 onward they were powered by the more potent VK 107A, which gave it a max speed of 434 mph at 16k and 379 mph at SL... after flying for a bit at 16k, I could never reach anything close to 350 mph, max I was getting was about 300 with 75% fuel.

So it seems that we have the VK105 version, which doesn't make much sense since more were produced with the Vk107, still, however, even with the 107 the 51 should still be faster than the Yak at all alt except for maybe 10-20k.

What's with that sudden slowing in the readings? What alt exactly? (Looks suspiciously like 8k.. damn, I can't trust anything Pyro posts anymore)

And do you have one of those for the Typhoon?

Cool.  After looking at that chart Pyro posted above and comparing it to the 51's, it's looking like the two are very close in speed all the way to 15k.  The 51 appears to have a slight edge in some areas, but the differences are quite small.

Pyro, how does it look with climb?

After trying the Yak, what I feared would haoppen did; the 109, an ungainly clumsy aircraft lost its edge. It might have a little edge on overall topspeed (gonna time that later) but Yak appears to do everythign else either better or so little less good that the difference is all but unimportant.

Good thing there's a new ride in town - A5.
