Somewhere in Iraq:
In a major operation launched earlier today dubbed "Spartan Scorpion", hunrdeds of U.S. Army troops raided the conservative town of Fallujah west of Baghdad, searching for illegal weapons that intelligence indicated were stockpiled for use against U.S. forces.
The raids, involving more than 1,300 soldiers, began just three hours after a deadline passed for Iraqis to turn in their weapons. One of three task forces involved in the operation reported only a single arrest... of a man driving during curfew hours bearing a Kalashnikov assault rifle.
The raid against Fallujah followed an extensive action last week, dubbed "Operation Peninsula Strike". Soldiers rousted residents from their beds and detained about 400 people (60 of whom still remain in custody).
The troops, wearing night vision devices under a bright full moon, found no weapons.*
