Nightime -- Pros and Cons
« on: June 15, 2003, 04:59:10 PM »
I like the graphic effects of dusk and dawn in AH, but I wonder if the 'annoyance factor' of the current nightime graphics is a greater customer negative than any positive realism added to the game?

Some examples of customer negatives would be:

-- We don't currently have cockpit or instrument lighting for aircraft that were night-capable.

-- I believe light source is modeled backwards. Currently, flying toward the light source (the moon) illuminates the panel and with the source at a rear quarter, darkens the panel.

-- We don't have 'Pathfinder' aircraft for marking targets for bombers.

-- Some players don't want to change their video gamma for a variety of reasons (i.e. too 'gamey', potential monitor damage, potential epileptic seizures from bringing up the map)
:D

The net result is frustration or simply logging off.

The customer positives would be:

-- Sorry, I can't think of any.

Would it be possible to leave dusk and dawn and just eliminate nightime until more advanced aircraft, DirectX and video functions can be incorported in the future?

Nightime Cons:

1) You can't see squat unless you "gamma" up your monitor.
2) It always comes along at the worst times (usually as I log on).
3) People log off in droves.

Nightime Pros:

1)  If your a Vampire you feel more at home.

That would be correct, beet1e.

Thinking about it more...I would say dusk and dawn are worse than nighttime.

I still curious to hear a reasonable, positive benefit (to the user or HTC) for having nighttime.

Would sure like to hear from someone who looks forward to AH nights.

I fly buffs alot but not at night - too dark to calibrate, or else can't even see crosshairs to drop.

I used to like it when it was 1st introduced... but it grew old on me fast. I'll usualy log out as well.

Maybe if Icon range would vary with lights... we'd be able to use this nighttime to make "sneak" attacks somewhere on the map... dunno. It is immersive when you are starting to fly AH hough.. and the orange sunrise has an "Ohhhh look" effect.

Until we dont have real night fghters and we cantr simulate night fights darkness makes no sence. So I would suggest to shorten the night time to a minimum (i.e. 0s) but still have a dusk and a dawn.

Dusk and dawn is ok.  It it the only way that we get a "realistic" environment with somewhat reduced visibility, esp. against the ground.   Pitch dark nighttime as a whole is rather useless, reason few complain is that they do the "gammatrick" and think they have an edge....  And so do the rest....

Hmmmmm.... :)

Oh, you must mean the realism of flying pure day fighters in a nightime environment.

Just another time to log and do the "honey dews".

Cuz there sure isn't much point in playing.
