How easy is a router/firewall to set up?  Would I set it up after the RR install guys leaves?

basically you take ethernet cable from modem into router, then ethernet cable from router to PC, go into the router config and it will find everything for you.  Firewall is imbedded in the router no need to configure it a router makes new IP and gateway address.  For instance my netgear is 192.168.0.1 or .0.2, .0.3 etc

pricewatch.com has shipping costs on the site to help find the best overall cost if I am not mistaken.

pricegrabber.com is another site that is good for finding resellers.  It also searches for a ton more things than just computer components.  Also has user reviews of various sites.  Drawback is it will not find nearly as many resellers as pricewatch.com will for computer parts.

all that said, newegg.com has always been good to me for getting computer parts.

yep...

so many forget that 192.168.x.x are private IP addresses. NOT sent over the internet. routers do not forward packets for addresses 192.168.x.x through them. so any packet trying to reach your internal "private" network will be bounced back. it's the best "basic" firewall that few hackers can get around. (i ran a firewall for 2 months behind my router and not a single attack was recorded)
I don't know what to put here yet.

AKnimitz...WELCOME TO TEXAS:D

I'm an Alabamian transplant, myself, and a dyed-in-the-wool child of the Bear Bryant era, but I got here as fast as I could.

Hehe Nimitz ... enjoy the heat .... I was born and rasied in San Antonio ....   Eat some Enchiladas Verdes and go see the Jim Cullum Jazz Band :D (they play nation wide on NPR from time to time)  And enjoy the NBA champs ....

On subject why hareware firewall...most cable modems operate as NAT's and "routers" in thier own way spliting your data apart from the stream.  Security is a good idea with cable as it's traveling on an analog, multiplexed line. (i.e. channel 3[KMOL NBC]  - 72 [sci-fi])  are multiplexed signals; data is split in this same manner.  So you have alot of other people on the same line as you.  People that are at the Mac layer... good reason to have hardware firewall ... hope that explains.  DSL is more secure, speacking in this reguard.

Enjoy San Antonio, Try Panchito's for mexican food :)....Austins a good place to have fun too, about 50 mins away.
