Cable Modem
« on: June 19, 2003, 09:40:02 AM »
Quick question ... I am moving to San Antonio, TX and we are setting up our utilities. We are setting up our cable modem service (through RoadRunner) ... and they are trying to tell me that I have to use their modem, that I cannot use my modem, that I bought from RoadRunner in Norman, Ok ... because their modem is special, as it communicates with their system.

I find this terribly difficult to believe, a modem is a modem is a modem isnt it? Should I fight the good fight, or give in and use theirs? Its all about principle baby! I bought that thing for a reason by god!

:) Thanks for any help.

Nim

I am going from dial-up to Road Runner in 8 days.  What do others use as a firewall?

A cable modem is a cable modem, each modem has its own unique MAC address.  IF you can get ahold of someone who know what they are doing at roadrunner you give them the MAC address from the modem and they plug that into their system which will give your old modem functionality on their network. BUT goodluck getting ahold of someone that knows how to do this correctly.

Get a hardware firewall, pretty cheap these days, little as $30. Will allow you to connect more than one pc and you don't have the overhead of software firewall running on your pc. Most importantly, you won't have any hackers/crackers/phrackers pounding on your pc nic.

I have and have had good luck with dlink firewalls.

Dont use software firewalls unless you are protecting a server or something.

get a good old router with hardware firewall. prolly $40-$70 depending. the bonus is you can share the connect (my roommate plays xbox online all the time)

(Apologies to aknimitz for the hijack)

Although I am a computer programmer, I know nothing about computer networking.  How easy is a router/firewall to set up?  Would I set it up after the RR install guys leaves?

Would anyone recommend this product?

I've  had a dl-804 for well over a year now. Works well, I reset it once or twice a month when I start dropping udp in AH.

The dl-604 looks like a good choice, found it at  http://www.pricewatch.com for $39. They are very easy to set up.

Word of advice dont buy the from the lowest priced reseller on pricewatch.com 90% of those resellers charge insane shipping prices and not to mention if something were to go wrong with it good luck returning it.  Newegg has done me right so many times I cant count.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=28&manufactory=1015&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1

$48 with free fedex shipping, maximum of 3 days to get to you

It also has a $10 rebate

This is after $10 said rebate, so newegg is $1 cheaper and a very reputabile company.
