Win 98 Se

Via system information I can see a whole list of programs that would be executed (if ticked) upon start up.

I have unchecked all those I do not want.......... but how do I clean this list up? I note that even upon un installing some they are still listed and many are now duplicated............

plus

its clear to me that CPU activity between pressing the on button and getting to the logon screen has increased over time.......... how can I clean this up? or where should I look?

The list of unchecked startup progies really doesnt hurt anything, but I do occationally clean it with System Mechanic (utility suite) due to annoying apps that like to write themselves in everytime you use them. Try looking here for a similar progie.

start menu/run/ type "msconfig" enter.

Click on the "start" tab.

You can safely disable almost every thing in that list; disabled items will show on the start menu in a new program group (folder) called "disabled items".

To 'clean up' programs you no longer wish to have in your startup, use RegEdit. Then delete the keys you no longer wish to have under Run and RunServices.
