I would guess the La Bayonnaise, a French Torpedo Boat, Circa 1937

Most Navy's during this time frame had Tprpedo Boats that resembled this one pictured above they were fast and lightly armed gun wise, thier reasion for existance was to deleave a large spread of torpedos aganst the enemy battle line, then retire or die trying:), PT or Patrol Torpedo were totaly different beast's obviously and most Navy's at this time had somthing resembling them as well.

I did a search last night and I found a picture of a ship that was similar to this one but I believe had 2 guns forwardand slight difference aft, was it upgraded after launch brady?

if I can find the picture again I'll post it.

The destroyer class emerged from torpedo boats.
Ya its in conways. But I knew from those big bellybutton numbers and the flag it was french and from the light gun armement it was probably a torpedo boat.

yep they where designed to destroy torpedoe boats, go figure

but honestly the picture of La Bayonnaise that I found looks different.

I've also seen (just from search engining today) reference to early destroyers being refered to as "torpedo boat destroyers."

The U.S. Navy built it's first destroyer (DD-1, U.S.S. Bainridge) in 1902.

Well, Conway's doesent realy mention any magor refit's that might of altered hear apearance drasticaly, She was Used by the Italians for a while, but I dont what to say other than that your source may be in eror, Conways is prety reliable I have found, or perhaps is simply a different aspect or maybe a later Photo.

No, your more than likely correct, like I said the picture I found( wich I still can't find again ?) had 2 turrets forward wich would be quite a modification.
