proper use of yo-yo's can seriously limit the n1k's advantage in a turn fight.

Inverted Gullwing.  Has any sim ever got the flight characteristics correct on the F4U?

Man I remember when I saw that big ol' blue F4-U at the USS Intrepid in NY, I was amazed at how big that a/c was and imagined how in hell did they get that thing down on carriers with its low vis. Will be fun to watch that big ol blue plane up in the AH skies.

P.S. ^ Shoot it down of course... <G>

More like in the dirt. Our runways are gonna get paved in enemy blue... the F4U is far better suited to ground attack than the P-51.

Runways are gonna look like "2000 Flushes"...

Yes, I did happen to see one of these birds fly! Large indeed!

And what came to my mind was not only HOW did they land them on the carriers with low vis, but how SMALL those carriers were back then?! You have to tip your hats off to them I tell ya.

Hey Glasses what year did you visit the USS Intrepid?  Was it back around 1976?

Reason I ask is that I don't think a Corsair has been on display there since then.  There has been one on display at the USS Yorktown since the late 1980's though.  The Corsair on display at the Intrepid Museum during 1976 was actually the F2G 'Super Corsair' that now resides at the Champlin Fighter Museum in Mesa, Arizona.

If you have any pictures it would be great if you could scan them for us to enjoy      I have yet to see the USS Yorktown Corsair, and would love to get some shots of the USS Intrpid display.

See ya when the Blue Tide rolls in!

I saw it just this summer 1999 August 1st I beleive, don't remember which ver was, but I recognized the bent inward wings and the big blue plane, plus it said on the caption it was the F4U. I'll try to find some more info on it cus it was next to the WWI plane display on the Intrepid to the right of the main entrance.

The only thing ugly about the F4U......is that D#&$(# YELLOW ring on the nose. Especially since they only used it (or the white one depending on the CV) for a couple of weeks in Feb/March 1945 on all large fleet CV aircraft involved in a particular portion of the Okinawa campaign (or, in other words, it is an invasion stripe so to speak).

I personally prefer the solid blue of VMF-214 =)

next would be the checkerboard around the nose =)

but I'll take it with a yellow stripe on the cowl if that's the only way I can get.  I dinnae care what it looks like, as long as it flies true to the real thing (or as close as HTC can get the flight model anyway =)

The yellow cowls were used for Air Group 84's first week of combat operations near Tokyo between the 16th and 23rd of February, then painted back over for the second round of strikes in that area. They were reportedly reapplied in March during the Okinawa and Kyushu raids.  All in all Air Group 84 spent more time without the yellow cowlings, but a large portion of their combat activity took place while the markings were in place.

One cool thing about the current AH markings is that they belong to the F4U flown by Roger Hedrick of VF-17 fame while commanding VF-84 from the USS Bunker Hill. If I had to choose a secondary scheme for the F4U-1D other than the current markings I would choose those of VMF-312 (checkerboard).
