Web Boards - News Groups what about it community?
« on: September 08, 1999, 06:32:00 AM »
I know matter between news groups and web based boards been talked quite a lot lately in WB general newsgroup. I've given a matter little thought and I wish to share my views with the community. I will post this article to WB General (both NNTP and web board) AH General and to Argos page.

First of all the multi player flight sim crowed needs it's own forum to communicate outside the game. In the days when I played AW I subscribed 666th-etal mailing list. WB folks started the discussion at usenet.news in the flight sim news group and later on that continued at ICI games own news server. Once Argo started his web board some of the regulars from WB news groups switched there and now that iEN has opened it's web board the discussion at WB news groups is getting smaller all the time. AH has never had nothing but poor web board.

Yes, this is a scream of dispair!!

The truth is that the players have chosen to go with web boards and companies are providing the easiest forums to companies. And  the community mostly settles with that without asking more. Also with web boards the companies get the added benefit of commercials - income is based on hits to web page.

What strikes me odd that why the community accepts a cube under their car when the wheel has been invented ages ago. (Cube here being web boards like Argos, WB and AH - wheel being NNTP protocol). The best solution to community would obviously be kind of serves that would offer both - web groups (with threading) and NNTP.

The only reason why I see that web groups are so popular is that one can 'steal' the employers time to read the happenings of his favorite hobby. Since the HTML port 80 is open, but NNTP port 119 has been closed in players work places firewall. Configuring news reader is easier than taking off in Spit XIV in WB  .

Here are the options that the companies can do:

Best would be to get good Web boards with threading and NNTP support - that would be ideal to all community. Secondly companies could open NNTP server in port 80, that would enable folks to read the news through companies firewall. Third, do nothing and let the folks read the poor web boards.

The community has also some options:

It can accept the crap web board and do nothing. Or should enough of us want the better stuff we will get it. After all the community is more than 50% of online-flight sim experience. Or we can take the conversation to usenet. First start it as a alt.group and slowly get it to rec.group(s). Should we get it there then it could be followed by web browser from deja news.

I hope to see that multi-player flight sim companies really do their best to keep their community together. And thus provide a discussion service with some power and properties too. After all WB calls itself a Premium game - is it wrong to ask Premium service?

iEN, HTC and PlayNet - are you willing to answer to your current or potential customers scream for help?

Keeping track of 3, soon to be 4, boards is a drag. OTOH, one must respect the companies integrity and not expect them to post proprietary stuff in the communal pot, as it were. I guess we're stuck with this situation

Only time I get a chance to look at AGW and others is DURING my lunch break.

The genius's here at work have blocked the NNTP port so well that I have to go home to read and post in NG's that are work related (MS DX beta and a few others).

So is this a post against using HTML beacause you really prefer NNTP or is it because you have employees "stealing" from you?

You miss the point - read his post again.

I'm with Zombie on this topic. Here is why:
I "have to" read 4 web-bbs's currently just
to stay informed about what happens in WB
(agw, ien, wb.de) and AH - when playnet opens
theirs it will be 5 boards

I have to read all those boards online, which
means that it is a time consuming task, no
matter if I do it in my lunch break or at
home (or -godforbid- during my work).

With NNTP you have the possibility to
download the groups you want to read at
once (either only the headers or the full
articles) and read them when you have time
to.

The most important feature those web boards
are missing is Threading, Filtering and being able to mark articles read.

On agw, eg., there is a topic (not a thread,
mind you) that has about 110 postings in
it; it's spread over 3 pages and you really
have to go at least through the whole last
page to identify the posting you have read
the last time and see what posting are new.

The arguments for NNTP are well known (better
performance, threading, filtering, off-line,
etc). Here are some arguments for web bbs's:
- you can place ads on a web board
- it's soooooo easy (well this is also valid for NNTP but who cares)
- most companies don't allow any other access
than on the WWW port

Judging those arguments, the only one that
is really valid is no. 1 (you can set up
an NNTP server on any given port, also on
80). This rises the question, why should
I have ads on a web bbs? Simple answer from
the company: to generate revenue by
ad-impressions.
Simple answer from a user's perspective:
what ads? I use the webwasher or any other
filtering programm so I don't see them
anyway (iEN lately tried to fool webwasher
but all you had to do is up-date the
filter list with www.gamehub.net   ).

So what would be a feasable solution?
Use a web-bbs with an NNTP interface! Those
who want to use the "click-me" interface (aka
WWW) would not have threading but they would
be happy. The company would be happy because
they could have their ad impressions. The
"more advanced" customers would be happy
because they had their NNTP.

Just my oppinion anyway,
Dancer out.

Tigger:

I thought that one could read from the original message that I'm very much pro NNTP. I knew that some people would be easily proveked and that was my intention. I don't want to insult anyone, but I won't appologize either  .
