Not a lot of use for AH. At the moment it's more of a server or workstation CPU. Big SQL database anyone? Need 8 GB RAM for that Finite Element Analysis? Go 64-bit. MS haven't released XP-64 yet, though it apparently does exist, so you'd have to dual-boot between XP and Linux to get the full benefit.

Remember when the P4 came out, it was actually slower than the P3? But later it ramped up and became far faster? Well, that'll be the story with the AMD 64. The chips and motherboards are brand new and undoubtedly have a few kinks, and I'll let the early adopters find them, but I expect to be going 64 bit next year.

AMD Opteron (formerly known as the Sledgehammer in the computer industry when it comes to "codenames") is an AMD's move into the 64-bit computing world, yet with the Opteron, it can also scale 32-bit applications just as good as any CPU would, and a bit more. Unfortunately, at this time, Opteron is a Server CPU and wouldn't be viable for a workstation (end users, you know - play games, use it for everyday apps - although there's going to be a workstation version of this - it's just a bit expensive and currently the boards that support this CPU does not have an AGP slot (at least to my knowledge).

The alternative to Opteron (the workstation version designed for us) will be the Athlon 64 (aka the Clawhammer) and it will be for us end-users to use - and it'll be able to do 64-bit applications when it starts to surface around in 2004-2006. Athlon 64 will be somewhat cheaper than the Opteron (obviously) and it will be better suited for us gamers and for those of us that use computer for everyday apps like Office (Word, Outlook, you get the idea). With the Athlon 64, the motherboards that will service this CPU will have an AGP slot, and eventually it will be phased out by the PCI-Express which is going to replace it sometimes in November-February timeframe (later this year).

I know it's a bit difficult reading what I'm trying to say here, mainly due to the fact that I'm experiencing somewhat of a blank in my mind right now and I can't think straight. Hope I cleared a couple of things up in here.

I think I better check other threads and see where I should add my input.
