Zoom Doom
« on: November 19, 1999, 03:11:00 AM »
I was just made aware that there is a Zoom feature.  This zoom feature makes everything about twice as large.  I now know how GUNNERY is done in AH. I wondered why I could not hit squat, and others seemed so successful.

Those HO shots, that I just could not see well enough to even see tracers, are no longer a mystery.

With all the grieve I have taken over my opinions on Padlock, no one mentioned this ZOOM concession.  This game concession is spelled C R U T C H?  Well IMO anyway.

I guess if it is "In the Game" it is "In the Game",  I will deal with it. This is the way I approach any game.  I will learn to use ZOOM DOOM.

<sigh>

Still, I was very dissapointed.  Realistic FM, realistic projectiles, realistic damage, realistic ZOOM.

One more hill to climb .................

Minotaur,
I don't use ZOOM at all.  I think I tried it once, but don't like the trade-off with SA.  Guess, I'm paranoid at heart.

Most of my good shot opportunities come from proper air combat maneuvers, placing me in a position where just about anything my opponent does won't matter - unless he outruns me, or I overshoot, or (groan) I miss.

With you, Leonid. It messes with my "finesse" moves near the critical moment, kind of like flying a different plane. I don't use it either.

Best use of zoom is to check aspect angle.

I don't use the zoom feature at all.
Same if there were a padlock view.

I admit, I use zoom quite a bit.

There are downsides.

Hard to track and recover a target if he gets out of view.

Limits extended/expanded views.

Gennerally speaking, if I get a con on my six while I am In zoom I am gonna be toast.

I do remember reading stories of pilots that did everything they could do get their face right up to this sight when shooting.

Lots of times it is a hinderance.

Just checked and I finished 173 in Beta 1 and am 174 in Beta 2, so I seem to have dropped a mark.

Minotaur,
The field of view depicted on your screen is 90 degrees.
With a 21 inch screen the actual field of view is about 30 degrees depending how far you eyes are from the screen. So you see everything 1/3 of the real life size.

Now, if your Zoom to 3 times magnification of the regular view, everything will become the same size as it is in the real life. You can hardly call it a crutch. And you do pay for it with having your field of view much smaller. It is very difficult to use the Zoom where you need to maneuver or pull lead. So most people use Zoom only for head-on shots or attacking bombers or ground targets.
Or for checking far-away contacts to determine which way they are pointed. For that we should really have a "binocular" view - a zoom setting of 20 real life power (or 60 game power) - many pilots had the 20x navy binoculars to check contacts and ground features from 25K feet, why shouldn't we? I would definitely sneak a theater binocular (4x, that's 12x game) into the cockpit if I were not issued one.

Regards,
miko--

I don't use the zoom key. It's not needed to shoot stuff outta the skies. Granted if you check my gunnery% it's pathetic, but then again many of my shots are done blind under the cowl or in a blackout.

I use the zoom key in most every combat.
On my 17 inch monitor the gunsight on my FW is only maybe 2 inches wide, I am over 2 feet away from it. I don’t think that this is realistic, it is a limitation of the technology we are using for simulation.   So I don’t think that zoom gives any great bonus over reality. I use it to help me pick up a target against the brown mountains through the dark gunsight and the shimmering propeller… If not for the big red icons over the bad guys I think that everyone would want a 32X zoom…
Just a newbie opinion

I never use the zoom key in a fite because I don't squeeze the trigger until I'm at d200 anyway, so I really don't need the zoom.

There are only 2 situations when I zoom in ALL the way. 1) In the B17 gunner position it helps alot, but this seems fair in a way because I can't do evasives in the B17, the attacker knows that and is probably using zoom on me, and I have to keep changing positions as he moves into different quadrants. 2) This one is just for fun, when sneeking up on a sleeping bogie from the lo 6 I like to hit the zoom and slo down to his speed so I can put the cross-hair right on his wing root. Don't get to do this often; makes me jealous of the super pilots who seem capable of achieving this at will in any kind of fite.

I spent 5 years as an aircrewman in the Navy on P-3c's.  Let me tell you, binoculars in an airplane suck.  I logged a few hours behind binoculars looking for floaters, these even had a gyro in em to help stabilize the image, and they were still a pain in the ass.

Try this as an experiment.  Next time youre a passenger in a car, whip out those Tascos and start reading street signs... its fun, till you puke

For what its worth I dont use Zoom.

I use the zoom some, but I have it mapped to my stick, plus I back it off a bit. I like it that way and having it mapped to the stick I have the choice of using it without fumbling with my keyboard. Over all, I could manage without it but I am glad its there

I use zoom to check a cons aspect at long range and when Im saddled up.

I have Zoom set up so it just overlaps in the 45 degree views.

I only use zoom to line up an enemy trying to run away from me so I can get a d100 shot at him - but now I do not use zoom anymore. because it DOES NOT WORK. I mapped the gun zoom key on my stick - ever since I cannot zoom anymore... not even with keyboard...  I would like to get it back - any suggestions?

Hell yes!

I use Zoom in the HO,when in the merge i wait till the AC is in front of me at a distance of under 2.0,this allows me to track the wing & try to remove it but also keeping me out of the direct line to the cockpit. As soon as the merge is over, and if i have any wings left Zoom comes off. So in total its used for about 3 seconds at the most in the merge.. That it..

Zoom or no Zoom, ill HO any AC with me 51
