To All The Computer Buffs Out There.....
« on: June 30, 2003, 11:25:25 AM »
I have decided to buy a new computer and im unsure of which monitor
to purchase, the computer comes with 6 different choices but im
mainly looking towards the NEC 17" MultiSync FE771SB Flat CRT or NEC
17" MultiSync LCD1760NX LCD....

I've had the Gateway FPD1500 Flat Panel Monitor for about 2 years now
and it has served me fine with the exception of not being able to see
at night in AH lol :)

Now i've been told but some the Flat Panel Monitors allow they are
more expensive, arent as good with color and game graphics...i was
wondering if this was true?

With that being said what do you guys out there think i should get

NEC 17" MultiSync FE771SB Flat CRT ($200)

Or

NEC 17" MultiSync LCD1760NX LCD (425-475)

P.S Sorry if this is in the wrong fourm

Flat panels are not regarded as preferred for gaming.  Flat panels only support one native resolution - and this is almost always not the resolution you are likely to run your games at so your vieo quality will not be as good.

Flat panels are good for one thing, and that is saving space.  CRT's do everything else better and even cost less.   There are other good CRT's but if you want the best I recommend SONY CRT's.

You CAN get a good LCD monitor for gaming but expect to pay at least $100-$200 more than your average LCD screen.  The thing you have to look for is a low pixel response time. If I remember correctly it needs to be 15ms or lower otherwise you will get "ghosting" in your games.  But do not expect the LCD to run at high resolutions, most will only max out at 1200x960 and at very low Hz.

Keep in mind the Refresh (Hz) rate for an LCD means nothing...unlike CRTs.  In a CRT a low refresh means headaches and eye strain...an LCD doesnt "flicker" (theres no gun shooting electrons at a screen as fast as it can...the pixels are just "on" or "off") so 60 Hz is the standard and its much MUCH MUCH clearer and more pleasing on the eyes than the best CRT.

With LCD panels the response time is VERY important for gaming...anything in the 15-19 ms rang is usually very good, and any ghosting is not obtrusive and you actually stop seeing it pretty quickly....25-35 ms is another story...thats just YUCK for any games outside Golf and Chess:rolleyes:

Contrast and Brightness are also very important, and unfortuantely, somewhat subjective, as some manufacturers use different testing procedures, so take those #'s with a grain of salt...cause a 250 contranst will certainly be ugly when next to a 500 contrast LCD...but the diference in a 400 and 500 can be less obvious.

Overall...look at the numbers but more importantly LOOK at the monitor!  Also before making your purchase, check with the manufacturer on what they define as a defective display (youd be amazed what some manufacturers refuse to fix).  Is it 3 dead pixexls....10.....5 always on or 8....does their location come into the equasion (Id sure as hell find 3 bright pink pixels near the middle of my screen annoying).

Penalty: An Autopsy Of Dead LCD Pixels
