P-51B Help Needed.
« on: July 01, 2003, 03:35:12 PM »
The B model we have in AH (tail #36913) was flown by Capt. D. Gentile of the 336th FS, 4th FG.

I have a Tamiya 1:48 kit of this plane that I will be starting soon. When possible, I like to build the planes we use in AH, such as this Hurricane IIC:

The 51B in AH has no country markings on the wings, yet these are shown in place in the instructions. Where they forgotten on the AH model, or are the instructions inaccurite?

Put 'em on. I have a photo of Gentile's fighter after he wrecked it beating up Debden. The National insignia is on the upper port wing. I guess AH goofed. Here's a photo of a Mustang painted in Gentile's colors at Reno.

My regards,

Man that is one beautiful looking bird !  One of these days I've got to make out to Reno and watch those warbirds.

AKWeav, I've got a question about the white bottom of that model.
I've got a model too which requires such a bottem, I taped the things off which I didn't want to get white but after paintbrushing it I discovered it didn't helped at all! the paint just leaked out trough the profile etc.
How did you do that so nice?

I prefer to work in 1/72 scale.  Academy makes a good P-51B kit but I can't recall if one of the markings selections is Gentile's plane or not (I know one of the options is Bud Anderson's "Old Crow").

Tamiya makes the Aces High F4U-1D in 1/72 but I haven't started on it yet.  A guy told me that Tamiya kits are good stuff, but I haven't even removed the shrinkwrap yet because I've been messing around with 109s, a Panther tank, an F-16A, and a Japanese WW2 starter truck that I'm going to display with a Ki-43 and Ki-44 that I'm working on.

I believe the standard US Army finish was Olive Drab with Light Gull Grey undersides.

Most importantly, do not use masking tape where two colors are to meet! Especially if you are brushing on the paint. If you look at the adhesive side of masking tape you'll find it's quite rough, providing plenty of areas for the paint to leech under.:(

Go to an automotive paint store, and get some blue "fine line" tape. This is available in varying widths. The thinner it is, the easier it is to bend around corners. For spraying, this tape can be backed up with good regular masking tape.

I do most of my large surface painting with an air brush. For the light gray bottom of the hurri, I only had to mask the cowl forwards of the wings, and the fuselage aft of the wings. The wings and stabelizers didn't require masking as the angle of the spray mist was away from the camo tops. This also provided a softer line of seperation.;)

Thought "Old Crow" was a 51-D model. 1:72 is too small for these old eyes.:(
