Bios Settings
« on: July 02, 2003, 03:13:56 PM »
I have recently upgraded my vid card to an MX440 SE. I downloaded their latest XP drivers and installed them. I have disabled the drivers for the integrated vid card that came with the computer, HP 514n, 2.2 ghz intel chip, Windows XP Home.

It was suggested that I need to change BIOS settings to further disable the old drivers and card.

How do I go about doing this?

You can disable the on-board video in the bios. Look carefully at each option in the bios. That function could be named several different things depending on your mobo and bios version... "Intergrated Graphics", or  "HP 514N Processor",  etc, to the right of which will be ENABLE or DISABLE selections. You will know it when you see it. Select "Disable" and you are done.

Varies from motherboard to motherboard.

Probably hold down F1 (or some other F button) or ESC on startup.  It should say when your computer is booting (before you get into windows).

And BIOS will let you disable the vid card, but if you want to get rid of drivers you have to go through windows.

ed: bios is part of your hardware, not part of windows.  OS does not affect it as far as I know.

When your computer first starts up it should say something like hold xxx key to enter setup. If you hold that key it will take you into bios and from there you can look for the option to disable onboard video. If it isn't there then your board may have a jumper that needs to be set to disable your onboard video. You need to look in your owners manual or the manufacturer's website to see exactly how to go about it.

most BIOS's use DEL key to function in my experiance, but it should tell you when you power on....

BIOS has nothing to do with your OS (ie windows XP)   it is built into your harware
