France to Americans: Drinks on us!

Amid drop in U.S. visitors after Iraqi war dispute, France rolls out free champagne, flowers.
July 3, 2003: 1:31 PM EDT

PARIS (Reuters) - Paris is launching a champagne and flowers charm offensive to woo U.S. tourists after France's opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq triggered a large drop in the number of transatlantic visitors.

About 100 hotels, restaurants, shops and other businesses will be laying on the bubbly, blooms and other treats for American visitors in a promotional campaign timed to coincide with the July 4th U.S. Independence Day celebrations.

"This campaign is aimed at Americans who would like to visit France, but are worried about what kind of welcome they might receive," the tourist office said in a statement.

Last year, Paris hosted 1.7 million tourists from the United States, more than from any other country, but in the first four months of this year numbers have slumped by almost a quarter.

Across the Atlantic, France last month launched a new promotional video, in which film director Woody Allen urged fellow Americans to visit France and eat French fries.

The dropoff in US visitors to France is probably caused primarily by the weak economy and strong Euro rather than by any perceived hostility.

Hundreds of G.W.Bush accents all in one spot would make the owners suspicious...

Belching and farting over an intercom doesn't make you an expert at the language! :D

Kudos again to Bill, the guy I REALLY learned english from - Of course, I learned english for 8 years in school, but NOTHING is like talking to a texan immigrant that works as a cook in a TexMex restaurant, and is tatooed like a gentlemen`s toilet.

BTW anyone ever heard of "Sik Mentality", the Hardcore band Bill used to sing in ?

Training my texan accent for a nice visit to France ;)

Hehe Well they're certainly not aiming this campaign at you, Rip. I mean, honestly, when was the last time you left the bunker? Six or seven years ago? :D

dang. free champagne.  Now that's good drinkin', and represents a serious cost concession.  Add that in to many other hospital parisian men and women (oh god, especially the women) who do their duty to offer to this poor american all the hospitality due an honored guest in their country.
alas, I'm stuck in the midwest, and for some odd reason, jet fuel prices this summer have plane tickets priced beyond what I can afford.
But no worry.  The french countryside is also my friend, and, should I have to go to France, I can always get some quality hospitality.   Imagine being a guest at a farm in the US where they still personally raise, harvest or slaughter everything they serve on the table.  It don't matter where you are in the world, that's good eatin'

Norht Korea is completely out of bounds with this threat.  They know that their country will be turned to glass if they do that.
