Sidewinder Precision2 Issues..
« on: July 04, 2003, 09:34:43 AM »
Alright, I've been goin nuts tryin to figure out what's wrong, and MS won't give me any tech support! So, I came here to ask if you have any ideas..

I got this stick 3-4 months ago, has worked fine since then, and now about 3 days ago I start playing AH, hop in a field gun, then grab the stick. Suddenly i lose control of my gun and start spinnin around uncontrollably, i check AH joy settings, see it isnt responding, look in windows (control panel>gaming options) and my stick isnt even in the list, so i reboot, check the list, it's back there. Go into the game, hop into a plane and grab my stick, throttle up and i start floppin around ont he tarmac. I groan, check it again, and it's gone.

Now every time i try and use it, the stick is undetected for some odd reason, i've checked the USB ports and those are okay, i've reinstalled the software, tried running it without the software but no changes whatsoever.

Any ideas? this stick is almost brand new :(

Are you plugging the joystick directly into a USB port or are you using a 4:1 adapter and plugging it into that?

The nice thing about port splitters is that they give you a "ready" and "Connected" indicator.

It sounds like your losing the USB connection.  I have no idea why that would be happening with the port on the back of the computer.

I assume you've also tried both ports?  Also... do you have a cat (Check the cord).  And with those two ideas... I'm tapped out.

I've tried both sockets, the ports themselves are okay, adn the joystick seems okay untill I move it (even then it'll work for a half a second or so).. about 5 minutes ago the 'new hardware detected' prompt came up for seemingly no reason, stick was displayed, didnt touch anything and poof, all is lost again.

*lol*  I have a cat :p  But the cords are okay..

I do remember one time the cat came barreling through (chasing invisible things) and tripped over the cord.. but that was weeks ago. (The cat's okay ;) )

Sounds like a lose connection or a grounding problem or possibly static.  Does just touching it for a few seconds cause a problem... or do you have to move it?

Well I havent rebooted or gotten a connection enough to tell, but so far it seems to be me moving it. I've had it in my lap and it was alright, but then i moved the trottle a bit and down it goes.

Sounds like a freyed wire or a broken wire held together by its shielding.  Unless you're in the mood to tear the stick apart, it may be time to look for another one to replace it.

Been there twice Rutilant.

First time was 5 months, 2nd was 3 months.

Suspect a weak wire in the cord from stick to usb.

Or it got a crimp, etc in it causing it to short someplace.

I got extended warrenty so they replaced both of mine.

Should try taking it back where you got it.

Think all MS sticks come with 1 year warrentee.
