"we are getting our butt's kicked"
« on: July 06, 2003, 10:49:52 AM »
Was enjoying a pretty decent fur a few days ago when I heard that by one of the guys at our field (over and over)... the guy was allmost hysterical and practically begging for someone to "do something"..

The area was a coastal field with a close enemy CV' off shore... they were sending in planes at about the rate of 5 for every four of ours.. really good odds in my opinion... sometimes it would get lopsided a little worse then swing back the other way..

I thought it was a turkey shoot.... lot's of targets trying to get in and either hit hngers or low level vultch.   I kept telling the guy to shut up and take off instead of milling around on the runway and that it was a great furball...  sheesh... you could land 4 kill sorties with a little sa or..if you lost concentration, die allmost immediately.

Just seemed weird to me that two people saw the same situation in such a completely different way...  For me it was low alt furball paradise but for him it was nail biting hell on earth...  The fact that we could possibly lose the base allmost caused him to have a siezure... the fact that I knew it couldn't last bummed me out.

Ahh Yes, The "Map Worrier" every side has them, and what a pain in the arse they can be. At least they tend to burn themselves out pretty quick

^ see your from Dixon, nice place

ya know cooley... you have hit on it.   They do tend to burn themselves out.   We have all seen it.

What will happen when all these new guys get skilled a little and don't want to steamroller or "missun"?

We better be ready with some alternative gameplay.

you don't get it lazs, the reason you had your "turkey shoot" was because the planes from the CV were trying to take the base*. if they did not try to take the base you would have had no "fun".

the very people you make fun of (strat)(base takers)(land grabbers) were the same people responsible for your "fun".

*you did say they were bombing the hangers.

BTW lazs, i'm glad we have pilots like you to defend our bases. ( we on the same side)

lol laz your right it is weird but its human nature and cant be avoided.

john9001 does have a point though laz! hes right about them trying for the base being the reason they were there. No base capture, no reason to be there for the majority.
There aresome who like just to fight but this sort of thing would only sustain interest for a smaller playerbase. With strat and mindless furball :) you can have both in the same area just like you describe. Some in that furball were trying to furball while others were trying to hit the base.take away the opertunity to blow stuff up and half your furball dissapears.

"O Lord, for what we are about to receive we thank you!" prays Mose Harper just before a slaughter.

Ever see that scene in The Searchers, movie by John Ford starring John Wayne?

Had a guy screaming on Bish channel the other night about an inbound raid on Base XXX! Help! Help! We gotta DO something!

I quoted him that line from The Searchers and pointed out it meant we're in for some fun.

Turns out nobody in Bishland remembered the scene... or the movie!

Lazs if you want to understand the feling of the other player  ... try flying with the left hand ... (or the right if you are leftie)

You will soon notice how for the average to begining  player it's frustrating

You also get newbie players that are alarmist.

They just see a bunch of enemy planes and start screaming that the sky is falling.

They simply don't have the experience to realize that the situation Lasz described in fun...not terror :D

Of course until newbies as such learn to fly well it will continue to be terror for them anyway.

Do these guys that endure such anxiety over realestate know about map reset ?

Someday they will realize that AH MA is one of those games that you can not win, or maybe they won't .

Indeed. There's no need to create or go looking for artificial/"manufactured" fights; Start attacking a base, and the action finds you!

Lazs, why the apostrophe in "butt's"???

Oh... I beg to differ.   I do believe that I get it.   I have said many times that if the fields were closer it would bring the strat and furballers together.

How?  well.... I'm not very good but I do mix it up.  I don't care about field cature but ai like to shoot the red planes.   To any strat guy watdching it looks like I am "defending the field" or.... attacking the field... john said that he was glad I was "defending the field".... I was doing no such thing... just killing red guys.   I was having a blast.

Mose?  I take that as a compliment.

Spot on ... For some its natural, for most its learned !!! ... standing on the sidelines fretting and wringing one's hands, only prolongs the learning curve.

The guy was obviously afraid of getting killed ... this always cracks me up !!! Oh my cod I'm gonna die ... wait ... I am back in the tower and I can pick a brand new plane and get back in the fight ? Cool !!!

What do you mean "can not win"?

Getting a base is a win.  Getting to the target and taking out the strat is a win.  Shooting down another plane is a win.  Sinking a CV is a win.  Defending a base successfully is a win.  Getting a reset is a win.

No, there are plenty of "wins".  Your mistake is that you think a "win" must correspond to an "ending".

Furballing is an endless game, but don't you feel like a winner when you land kills?  But wait--the other guys can come back to "life" and try again.

Strat is an endless game, too, and I feel like a winner when I acheive my (admittedly transient) goals.

And thank goodness it never ends, even when we win.
