If you are into automobiles like me, an interesting thing to read up on are the patents owned by the various automakers and subsidiaries. Its very interesting and even surprising to know who invented all that stuff and still owns the patents. Sorta like looking at the evolutionary tree of automobiles.

Example, theres Mitsubishi inventions in Porches and Bosch stuff in just about every Japaneses car these days though it may say Nippon Denso. Then theirs Italian Weber Marelli patents, etc.. etc... etc...

All or most for cylinder engines over 2.0 liter today has a lineage from a Mitsubishi. Ok, Im going to find some coffe and a game of ping pong. Later.

I gotta admit I spent some time looking up some friends' patents. The uspto site is very nice.

Here's one that just about every non-US auto manufacturer jumped on when it expired: variable valve timing.

Are you training to be one? I've got an interview with a Patents Agency next week to be a Trainee Patents Attorney.

Got any tips?

I don't rate my chances - I graduated three years ago and don't have a PHd, but it was from a good university in Applied Physics with a year spent doing original research into conductive polymers.

They've asked me to prepare a description of the operation of a staple remover for the interview.

I don't intend to get into Patents really, I'd rather stick to copyright and trademark (not having a technical background hurts me a bit for patent law). But I'm just starting law school this fall, so I'll know more in about 2 years lol.

Not unless I start one

I get SOME tuition assistance from my company, but only $7,500 a year (out of a $38,000 annual bill lol)

Sik - that's a huge cost. But I guess it gives you an incentive, if you needed one, to complete the course. A friend of mine works as a barrister in London - it emphasized to me how lucrative a profession it is. I'm sure a few MacDonald's scalding coffee cases will make it all worthwhile.
