slow mouse=control lag
« on: November 20, 1999, 05:54:00 PM »
I have several AH computers, including one that is giving me problems with ver 0.39. When I move the mouse, there is a major delay in the the pointer moving. This same computer, a Celeron266 overclocked to 400, also has developed a real delay between when control inputs are applied and the control actually responds. None of my other computers have this problem. Does your computer? If so, describe CPU, video card, and res/depth used.

CPU= 266 celeron O/C 400mhz (no cache)
Video card chip= Diamond 550 (tnt) AGP
1280x1024 res, 32 bit color

Edited note:
I changed the resolution to 1024x768 and to 16 bit color and the problem pretty much went  away. Although frame rates may not change much in higher res and higher color depth, if your mouse cursor acts very sluggish, you may be exceeding some ability of your system to keep everything working right, and a control lag may result. If controls feel sluggish, consider changing resolution and color depth and see if it makes a difference. I also found that the damper setting in Ace's High joystick menu also affects crispness of controls.

Sometimes I see this problem, others time I dinnae see it.  Usually it appears to be due to extremely low frame rates.
Only time I've seen delays in control inputs have been when the game hits the hdd for something and everything pauses.
One delay I do get quite often is in the radio.  The keystrokes seem to be delayed, and very often the wrong key will be shifted (this causes me to send +0 instead of =) quite often)

Cave may be on to it. If you have MS Office loaded on that computer (and maybe even if you don't) there is a program called "Find Fast (found in control panel) that indexes your entire harddrive every two hours (default setting). You might want to go disable it?

The problem is the TNT chip at high res and high color depth. I moved a faster cpu into the machine, but it made no difference. I reduced the resolution to 1024x768 and the color depth to 16, and the program worked fine. No delay between control movement and seeing the airplane respond.

This is an interesting problem. Instead of seeing a degredation in frame rate at higher resolutions and color depth, I experienced a slow down in the amount of time the video card takes to display what just happened.

If you notice your controls not responding as quickly as they should, consider trying a lower resolution to get the sim flying right. If you don't like the lower resolution, a new graphics card might be the answer.
