Bastiges!  Saw that live when it happened.  They replayed it several times throughout the game.

Thats a Miller Park (County Stadium actually) classic tradition... and this turd has the gaul to whack our Italian Sausage.

ALL the radio morning shows are talking about it around here... they think it's hilarious.  Leslie Nielson was a guest on one station and he couldn't help from cracking up :)

I wonder what the fans will do to Simon today... that is, if he even gets off the bench.  :D

Octavius, did he look like he whacked her with malice, or did he just really want the bratwurst to win, so he took out the italian sausage and by extension, the hot dog?   ;)

Its outrageous, aggregious, and litigious!

===From news online=====

NL notebook: Pittsburgh's Simon takes swing at racing sausage

Pittsburgh first baseman Randall Simon was booked for misdemeanor battery for hitting one of the Milwaukee Brewers' popular racing sausages with a bat during last night's game.

Simon was released, said a spokeswoman for the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department, who asked not to be identified. Simon will meet with the district attorney's office today, and it will be up to prosecutors to determine whether formal charges are filed.

In an event that's a fan favorite at Miller Park, four people in sausage costumes race around the bases between the sixth and seventh innings at Milwaukee Brewers games. This is hilarious!  Almost makes me want to catch a Brewers home game some time, if its ever aired on national tv.

Film of Wednesday night's race showed that when the group went past the Pirates' third-base dugout, Simon took a two-handed chop at the Italian sausage character — portrayed by a 19-year-old identified only as Mandy — hitting her from behind and causing her to tumble to the ground.

As she fell, a nearby sausage — the hot dog — went down as well.

"This is one of the most outrageous things I've ever seen inside a ballpark or outside a ballpark," said Rick Schlesinger, Brewers executive vice president of business operations. "It sickened me to see it."

Well a friend of mine who was at the game just walked in the office.  He says Simon didn't actually "whack with malice".

He described it as a "playful thwack" at the soft part of the costume near the "head" of the sausage.  Those things are pretty damn tall... apparently he hit the soft part and did not or did not intend to hit the runner.  I'm guessing the bat hit the soft part, the runner lost the center of grav, and fell over.

The paper claims they were treated for injuries... possibly from falling down and not from contact with the bat.  They *did* get up and finish the race.

Either way, you dont hit sausages!  IT'S JUST NOT RIGHT :D

I can't find a film of it but it was all over the news this morning.  CNN headline news is showing it every hour.  :D

I agree that it doesn't look like he took a "whack of malice".  It does look like he is aiming for the obviously empty top part of the very tall costume.  But still, his swing wasn't a love tap.

I'm trying to remember, but I think they were:

Italian sausage (which was tapped, sending it out of control)
Hot Dog (which was caught in the melee and went down)
Kielbasa sausage (which avoided the accident)
Frankfurter (which was on the inside lane and escaped the crash)

It looks like the Italian sausage was on the outside along the wall, leading by half a link with the hot dog drafting just inside and the Kielbasa alongside.  When the Italian went down, the hot dog had nowhere to go and was caught in the crash.

I'm surprised a Canadian ham didn't come out to pace the group while the safety crews cleaned up.  There should've at least been a local yellow!

Political correctness in action, they're trying to represent something the real French don't have... :D

More on this story:

Quote
(Brewers spokesman Jon) Greenberg said the racing sausages were scheduled to compete against racing pierogies (dumplings) at a series with the Pirates in Pittsburgh Aug. 15-17 and then again during a series between the teams Aug. 22-24 at Milwaukee.

Gosh, I hope they don't cancel the races!  Its about the only interesting thing going on in MLB right now.
