Ebay and computer hardware
« on: July 10, 2003, 09:59:23 PM »
Has anyone bought computer hardware from ebay I'm looking on buying a Radeon 9500 Pro but don't want to fork out 200 bucks  for a whole new one I've seen a couple mildly used for about 125 to 150 ,think it's worth it  should I trust the favorable votes for an user?

My Leadtek Gf2 GTS finally died it doesn't want to boot either in my new or old system and it didn't even booth when I had everything disconnected so I guess she finally past. could it be that my agp slot fried it?

I have a friend who buys lots of computer hardware off of ebay.  Just know what you are doing.

Can get a 9600 PRO (slightly slower than the 9500 PRO in some cases) direct from ATI for $149 USD

http://mirror.ati.com/buy/traderebate/tradeup.html

Check their trade deal.  Its actually $149 + $50 trade in which they credit you  (basically refund your CC) when they receive the POS you are trading in.

Check some reviews, the 9600 may do it for you

Well from what I've read at anand and tom's the 9600 pro is slower than the 9500 pro and the 9500 pro is a detuned 9700 pro with 128 bit architecture instead of its  un castrated brethren, and could actually be o clocked to run at 9700 stock speeds,so that's why I'm interested. :D

Problem is also SKurj my Gf2 card is hosed. it just gives me error leds on boot up and beeping on both mobos I've tried it my old and new one. before it took several times to boot and it finally gave me a green led but now in both mobos just error red led.

Well the only thing I've bought off e-bay was a book and it was fast and painless ,that's why I'm asking about hardware since it's the first time I've purchased or planning to purchase I should say hardware off of it.

Just check their feedback and make sure everything is ok within in the last 30 days. I have seen guys with 100% feedback flake out for mysterious reasons and take peoples money, but they havent traded in the past 30 days and more than likely their account was hijacked.

Hey I have a question about this paypal deal is it safe to pay through these people since  the only other methods are very slow.

Would you recommend me to make my payment through that method or just go ahead with a check or money order?

Paypal gives you slight better protection in the fact that if the buyer decides not to send your merch or if it is defective/not as advertised you can get a % of your money back.  I have heard horror stories of people that have hijacked ebay ID's along with paypal and once you pay them, you cant get your money back.

Glasses..........

The 9500 none pro was/and can still be found on the 9700 series PCB BUT..........

The ram layout on the 9500/9700 PCB is in a "L" shape (2 rams above gpu 2 lower on side of gpu
Now, the revised 9500 PCB (ATI Sapphire etc the rams are 4x inline eg - - - -     these are all around and can only be clocked to 9500 pro specs)

Ati revised the 9500 PCB as word got out that it indeed could be brought up to 9770 spec BUT this was also the luck of the draw, Some GPU's were slightley flawed (especially early runs) so they were put onto 9500/9500 pro pcb's, Some guys were lucky and got 9700 specs from "L" shaped 9500 pcb layouts

I will post a few links for ya asap so you can see diff pcb layouts

L shaped 9700 pcb http://reviews.designtechnica.com/guide13.html

Skim down here you will easily see L shaped against inline ram
http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/radeon/r9500-9700-dx9-p1.html#p2

Luck of draw i mean getting the pipes to fully run without artifacts or not even getting to open all of em as on a 9700 etc

IMO you must know what the regular retail (or sales) price for the brand and model item you want so you know when it has stopped being a bargain when you're bidding with others.  And *never* buy from anyone who has less than spectacular feedback.  I never buy from anyone who has 1% or more negative feedback and even then they had better have dozens of items sold.  I also never buy from someone who has no feedback.  This has worked for me as I've not gotten bit once eBay.  And make sure that the shipping, handing and insurance charges are specifically spelled out.  Many people pad thier auctions to boost profits with exorbitant S&H charges.  And IMO you DO want insurance and package tracking. It's inexpensive to add and it let's you track where your package is and the insurance will cover you if it arrives broken.

Good luck!

 Westy

p.s.  I only use postal money orders too.  With Paypal they let you use your credit card up to $2,000. And when you hit that limit they want to link your Paypal account to your bank account.  I dropped them when that happened to me. When I hit the limit I figure they made enough money off me though my purchases that they did not need my bank account info at all and closed my POaypal account.   Since switching over to using money orders I'm no longer worried about any fraudulant or accidental credit cards charges showing up.   Especially in light of Paypals problems (hackers and clerical/comp errors). With money orders it takes a few extra days but IMO it's worth that added transaction turn around time.  I also very rarely use personal checks as using them tends to really slow down the turn around time. The seller will usually wait 10 business days to make sure the check clears before shipping the item. If you don't mind the wait and if you want to entrust the person you're buying from with your bank account info (it's printed on your check) and signiature then feel free to use those.

We've used paypal for 3 years & never had a problem.

Its actually easier for a buyer than a seller.
As there are a few hoops you have to jump through to get your money out.

IE takes a bit of time.

As to Ebay, check feedback before you bid.

There is an option to "watch this item". Use it, save your bid till 5 minutes before the auction closes. Then bid as high as your willing to go.  Chances are you will get it for less.

Know what your willing to spend & quit there.

Doing it that way avoids tipping off other bidders, & starting a bidding war that you don't want to get into.

Screw EBAY.

Got ripped off twice now by sellers with 1k + pos feedback. Contacted Ebay , they don't care, they wont do anything about fraud, just redirect you to other fraud agencies. They don't wanna lose that business therefore they will never get any of mine.

I wish you luck buying hardware off Ebay.
