It might look weird to you but that's how that particular unit's B-17Gs looked like.

It was mostly B17Fs and lower marks that had the olive drab paint job.

The reason being I think the polished metal caused less air resistance.

They stopped bothering to put the paint on because there was little threat of the airfields being attacked (so they didn't need to be hidden on the ground) and 300+ B17s in the air were pretty damn hard to miss no matter what colour they were painted. Dropping the paint was just a convenience: it meant less work at the factory and less to maintain in service. Though they weren't polished there was a weight saving but I don't know if this improved performance to any noticable extent. Some fighter units polished their a/c when they had time: this often led to a few extra mph on the top speed.

Can we polish our planes in the ToD?

Give us something to do while we wait for a mission.

I know American Airlines did not paint their aircraft because that related to much less weight, and therefore, greater fuel economy.

Probably the same deal here.

Weight and Paint...

Planes as small as an F-16 Will weigh 600 Lbs more with just their primer. -- Which is why almost all Airforce planes are Grey.

Flying through "BugStorms" also takes off paint just like sandblasting. -- Imagine what a B17 goes through, the plane would just about need need a new coat on all leading edges after every flight.

A polished bare metal B-17 will have a 30 knot speed advantage over a painted one. This can shorten many raids by hours!

I'd also heard the non-painted look was to make spotting the buffs easier thereby drawing the LW out to play...

600lbs to prime an F-16?

Unlikely.

The external tank on the space shuttle was painted white for the first two flights with a thick, heat resistant paint.

After the flights, they realized that there wasn't as much heating as expected, so they stopped painting them.  The amount of weight saved?

600lbs.

Your figures about the F-16 are...  excitingly wrong, 2Hawks.
