Actually, it only had a very tough armour in the cockpit/engine area. The pilot was sitting in an armoured "bathtub". As an interesting sidenote, the rear gunner didn't have a similar armour protection in the early models.
So, if you want to shoot into the cockpit for a "fast" kill, you have to come in high and shoot through the canopy. Shooting from the behind or below will be useless, as the cockpit and engine are well protected.
However, the control surfaces and wing roots should be pretty "soft". Cannon armed planes shouldn't have much troubles shooting IL-2's down. Planes with only heavy machine guns (13mm/0.50cal) should aim to the wingroot or go for a "head shot".

I agree on the HO part.
