Hi guys  :)

I had question after reading TAIC report No17(this report is A6M5 compare to some US Navy Fighter.)

F6F-5's  top speed is 409mph(about 654km/h) on this report.
But, @F6F-5's top speed value is 612km/h in my Knowledge.

If this reason is known, I want you to teach.

F6F-5 condition:
Basic weight   9389lbs
crew                 200lbs
fuel -250gal     1500lbs
oil -16gal           120lbs

armament
6 50.cal MG        356lbs
2400rnds ammo 720lbs
-------------------------------
Total                  12285lbs

Pkun,

Do you have this report?? I have been looking for it for a while.
I only have the excerpts from "Zero" from Warbirds History series.

If you actually test the F6F-5 offline and view the TAS vrs the IAS you will find that the real top speed of the F6F at around 20K is 400MPH. The IAS show you about 20MPH less. Historically the F6F had a large error in the calibration of the speedometer at very low and very high speeds. So I guess HTC models that as well.

At low speed with flaps down the F6F-5 would indicate 0MPH while flying. Later models corrected this.

BTW, If you have the report I would really like to get a copy, please!! :D

Pkun,

I just reread your post. I don't know if I answered your question right so I try again.

The real top speed of the F6F-5 is around 400MPH at 20,000FT. This was due to a pitot tube error that would show about 20mph slow in early F6F-5's. This problem was corrected in later models.

However the 380MPH figure for the F6F-5 persist to this day.
