autos are ok if you are disabled or your wife runs your life or if you are just "very sensitve for a male".   Prone to breaking out in tears while watching lifetime or..... dowding.  (not that there's anything wrong with that).    

If you won't cop to any of those things then you could say that you bought the auto cause you are a coffee lover..

Actually, I have to confess:

I have automatics in both the Explorer and the F150 P/U.  Like MrLars said, for towing in a city, Auto is the only way to go (stop and go that is...) but the car has a manual.

I have auto in my truck.  It would be more diffcult to talk on the phone, take notes, drive.. AND shift. Neither of my boats are real heavy but it wouldn't be any fun going through town in a manual whilst towing.  Rush hour traffic in a stick....yuck! I don't drink coffee, either.  I don't feel gay though. Hmmmm.

MrLars; the comment was tongue in cheek and ironic (referring to the |337 d00dz in games who call everyone gay). I tend to think it's obvious when I'm serious by experience has proven me wrong. I'll add a smiley next time.

Majjic, I just find automatics dull and boring.Sure they might be great in heavy traffic (not much of that here) and very useful, but they're dull.

I want performance and fun. Functionality in this respect will be more important when I turn 40 and have a more regular life with more regular needs I guess.

My Dad drove 18 Wheelers and that was what I learned to drive on. A 1968 Kenworth, 318 Detroit with a 4x4 transmission. Now 4x4 does not mean 4 wheel drive, it means dual 4 speed transmissions (2 sticks!)...16 forward gears and 4 reverse gears. He also made me learn to back a trailer before learning to drive forward. Dad was a SOB, but it cracks me up to watch people try to back trailers while looking thru the rear window and not using their outside mirrors.

Quick tip on backing, put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and move your hand the way you want the trailer to go.

For kids learning to drive, Stick absolutely.  They have to pay attention to their driving much more than with an auto, as it is nigh on impossible to do anyting but shift and drive.  I choose late 80's early 90s Volvos for this.

For those of us who are,   ahem,..... more mature, driving in, around and to cities, I vote auto even for and maybe expecially when towiing.  If it's off road or a tractor pull and then I go back to the stick.

If you ever want a good laugh, just go to any local boat launch and watch folks back up their trailers...maybe its just this state, but MY GOD people are brainless when it comes to backing up trailers.

I believe the number one cause of traffic is the invention of the automatic transmission.  Dumb-arse morons haven't a clue on proper gas/brake usage!  "Gas..to much gas...BRAKE HARD...gas...to much gas...BRAKE HARD":p

funked... what more do you need?  Steve and rip both drive autos.

certainly people towed things with a stick shift before.

I will admit tho... the more boring a car is the more one is tempted to get it in auto shift and the more you will be concerned with what kind of radio /sound system it has.
