i read today in flypast magazine that a 262 had a turning circle of aprox 11 miles ... is this true?

Well SR71 takes about 500km (IIRC) to turn around at full steam thought my guess is it takes less when under Mach 1.

No.

Imagine it going 720 km/h (200 m/s) at an altitude where it can still pull 5 G (or actually a bit more to avoid losing altitude). That will result in a turning circle of 1630 m or pretty exactly 1 mile.

Of course, in the thinner air at increasing altitude, it will lose the ability to pull 5 G, though. Still, as long as it's able to sustain at least 1.4 G, the turning circle at even at the aircraft's top speed of 880 km/h will not increase beyond 12.2 km or 7.6 miles.

The turning circle will ofcourse decrease when at lower speeds.

oh and staga, I think the Blackbird is a bit too modern to mention here ;)
that thing goes over mach 3 :eek:

good points i was alarmed at the mag as the artical was written by a 262 pilot..

Maybe they forgot to do the math when converting his answer in KM into miles.

yes it is true just do the math 500mph start to turn how far have u travelled.

i like the bit where he shook the engine mount bolts off :eek:
