Most Crappy AH-playing Computer Competition...
« on: December 10, 2000, 01:06:00 PM »
Here's my bid:

P166
8mb Voodoo 2 Card
64 Mb RAM

FPS:

300 yrds from a plane/dogfighting = 6-7 FPS
Landing = 6 FPS
Normal Flying around = 13 FPS
Close to a buff = 3-4 FPS
Smoke = I avoid it at all costs!

PS. the CPU is MMX, which of course makes all the difference.

Anyone regularly play AH on a worse machine?

I had a brief stint on my brother's computer when I was there for Thanksgiving.  That was 32M ram, though it was a celeron 500, the graphics card was a generic 4meg onboard.  I couldn't even read the text, icons or chat, and talk about spray and pray...

how the hell did you tweak 13 fps outta that thing?

Btw you win.

My old Cyrix 233 w/32 MB Ram and a 4MB Monster 3D got about the same.

Ouch. Now... HTC says the minimum system requirement is a 233...?

Mine's a 350... I get about 20 fps with it (on a clear day) and that is just enough for me. I'm getting greedy for a better one soon

Dowding,

Wow! Since I had P166 how many cpu's, video cards, sound cards, cdroms, ram, operating systems, speakers, subwoofers, joysticks, throttles, rudders, microphones, hardrives, modems, ISP providers, baud rates, DSL, motherboards, floppy drives, cases, zip drives, printers, scanners, fans, and how much money have I spent?  What is depressing is how much more I am likely to spend.

Think how much you have saved.

Sometimes, I even get 20 FPS - but only if I'm at 25k, looking straight up at the sky.   Dogifighting is really hard; it's like there's a really bad internet lag. It's a good job my connex is pretty good, else I'd be screwed.

I was in the Afrika campaign, and the frame rates there are even worse - I couldn't dogfight at all.

And to think it was cutting edge in 1997.

But I'm upgrading soon (or rather building a machine from scratch), with a budget of about £1600. Should be able to get an Athlon 1.2 GHz and a Prophet II card with that. Should take a couple of months to get everything together. Or I might wait a bit longer until the P4 is out.

Whatever I buy, it's bound to be out of date within 6 months.

lol Ice

I fly knights under the handle 'Koba'. I fly the La-5 or tiffie mainly.

Just look for the plane that's gets on your six, but just can't seem to make a kill.
