i have spoken to at least one vet who said that they carried any gun they could in c 47 and in the pacific theater he shot tommy guns at niponese aircraft several times. hes dead now so i cant ask him if it was out the back door or if the poked a hole in the back, but he said zekes were a rare sight where he was mostly it was lightly armed recon planes that would try to down a c47 knowing that they were unarmed 3 guys in the back with tommys would usualy scare um off.
anyone else hear this sort of story?
and if it was a normal thing (they had crew and a 45 cal slug is a squeak if it hits. it is a slow (900 fps) but the rate of fire is astounding.
and i believe in aw now c47s have a tail door gunner so there is a precedent.
i can see the debate now on colt automatic pistol cal .45 leathality hehe.
