Amsoil: Anyone use it?

don't bother.   I use mobil 1 or royal purple... most synthetics test out about the same but mobil 1 and royal purple will add about 8 hp to a 400+ hp motor as proven on the dyno..  synthetics will also keep the engine about 5 degrees cooler and offer much better film retention for startup..  

In order to change oil on my 468 I have to loosen one header and pull a couple of scattersheild bolts to get the filter out so I like the fact that I can go a little longer between oil changes.

Most of the people I have encountered who endorse Amsoil also sell it.

I use Mobil 1.  We have a guy in our WRX club who gets oil analysis done regularly and the performance of Mobil 1 is really impressive.  I change mine every 3500 miles or so because I drive like a maniac.  But the analysis results show that Mobil 1 can go beyond 10,000 miles in a WRX.

I guess what I'm saying is this:  Amsoil might be great stuff, but for my car at least (115 hp/liter turbo, about as stressful an environment as you can have), Mobil1 (and probably the other synthetics you can get at Walmart) is overkill.

I find it interesting that they reccomend oil change every 1 year/25,000 miles and a filter change every 6 months/12,500 miles. Seems that would be pretty cheap.

Also, I've got an old GMHTP around here somewhere, in it they ran some dyno tests on oil. Turns out changing from dirty conventional to new conventional was worth more hp than the change to synthetic. I think the change to syntheic was worth maybe 1-2hp on a 400+hp LT1. Thats somewhere about the limit of accuracy of the dyno they were using.

I still use mobil1 in everything I've got. I havn't found a reason to switch to AMSoil yet, though I've considered trying it.

yeah.. it's subjective..  changing to roller rockers can be worth between 0-10 hp depending on how far "off" your old rockers were and how accurate the new rollers are..  

I switched to comp cams molly rollers and I could actually feel the difference.   course... I had seen evidence of the stud contacting the end of the slot in the stock stamped rockers.   I felt no differendce in changing from regular to synthetic oil but the synthetic gives me some peace of mind so it's worth it in that regard..

oh... same for synthetic gear lubes.   The test I seen for the royal purple was in Super Chevy I believe.

I use Castrol semi-synthetic. Cheaper than syntec, protects a bit better than dino oil.  I change oil every 3,000 no matter what, so spending more on full synthetic seems like a waste. I know that full synthetic is good for like 10,000 miles, but I just wouldn't feel right running a car that long without changing oil.

I did the math and my oil budget is about 1/8 of my fuel budget.  So in terms of the overall "consumable fluids budget" it doesn't matter too much if you use synthetic or dino.  It probably doesn't matter because I change it so often, but I drive like a maniac, turbos do bad things to oil, and synthetic gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

I get between 8-14 mpg in both my cars.   Supposedly... you can pick up 5% in gas milage with synthetic which would help offset the cost.

I've always used RedLine 100% synthetic in my cars. Never go past 5,000 miles before an oil change when using synthetics even though some suggest you can go up to 7,000 and beyond. For dinasaur oil, I change at 3,000 and for sythetic, 4k-5k.

Most modern day oils are good.

Well I have to admit I've never owned a car that had more than 200 HP. My last car had about 150 but it didnt matter cas I already had too many tickets anyways. I like the sythetics cas it keeps that just changed the oil feel longer than conventional oil. I do believe that sythetics help your engine last longer, drove some of my cars for a very long time. I remember my brother had a CRX and his HP deteriorated throughout the years because he ran conventional oil. My GTI kept its power till the day I got rid of it. What I commute with these days has about 130 HP but now Im running French oil.



Rip, I would vouch for Amsoil as a good oil.

Amsoil is a good oil. I prefer the cheaper Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntech (I've been using the Syntech 5w50 with good results in my 170k Mitsubishi).
