Warps & the main arena (TOWD)
« on: October 23, 2000, 10:44:00 PM »
this has nothing to do with connections that is why im posting this here.

Towd im looking forward to seeing the film you made the other night when you told me i was warping. i would also like to see a tracer for your connection as well. Right after i left the main arena i use ping plotter to make these tracers. the last week has proven to be the best for connections for me. ppl tell me i warp all the time but i very seldom see any warps all, though i seen a few the other night while zigrat and i flew against each other.

Hehe Robert - I've yet to engage towd where he *didn't* let ya know that he filmed it and would use it to verify some wacky claim

It's gotten to the point where if I suspect I'm fighting him, I hit the record button just to be able to give him a little 'perspective' if need be.

He's a good flyer though.... gotta give him that.

From what i am told... DSL packets are large, and this makes them No good for gaming. you need to set your packet size smaller, this can be done in your system.

Why is it you guys with cable/dsl think your setup is Gods gift to gamers? Does anyone remember that online gaming has been designed around modem use?

Just because you have a supposedly "flawless" conncetion does not mean it works "flawlessly". I've seen a trend lately where people have been accused of warping and a lot of responses are "I can't be, I'm using cable/dsl or I've got these incredible ping times, must be your end" kinda thing. Well, I'm kinda thinking maybe these hi speed connections are the problem.

I've been using a modem since day 1, probably won't get broadband access here in the 'sticks' for a few years. I've only been accused of warping maybe 10-20 times in the last year, and unintentional discoes are almost a thing of the past! I must add that HTC has provided the best conncetion I've ever experienced in an online game! And when my connection does deteriorate, it is mostly due to the time of day(to many users) and there ain't much I can do about.

RWY, are you using a Cable modem? I've read that they are highly succeptable to 'to many users on the pipe' syndrom.

I just want people to think first before they go defending their 'awesome' connect. There are to many variables IMHO. Server upgrades to newer, faster different technologies, broadband becoming more accessible to everyone, more traffic, etc. I'm not versed in the way of the Web or how Servers work, but I think maybe different connection rates that are communicating with the host might be a consideration these days. Remember, these games were designed to communicate with modems with a minimum connection speed with packet loss being more critical than the speed you connect at.

Any techno heads want to chime in and help us out?

Basically, higher bandwidth connections do tend to have lower latency, and normally they are more stable overall.  However, routing problems can cause lost packets or latency variations regardless of what your particular connection is.

Basically, the big killer here is big variations and lost packets.  For this reason, doing a series of traces over several minutes will tell you much more than a single trace.  Use a tool such as http://www.pingplotter.com  and let the traces run for 10 minutes or more at the times you usually play.  Now, from the edit menu, you can select copy as text or copy as image.  The best deal is to copy it as an image, and then paste that picture into paint or something and save it.  (Paintshop Pro or something and saved as a GIF is likely the best way.)  Then, if you can post that picture on the web and link us to it here, we can take a look.  If not, then just do "copy as text" and paste the results straight into a message on this BBS.

You can have a great ping time, and do one or two traces and a problem may not show up.  Doing a series of traces over time with a tool like pingplotter is required to really get a look at your connection.  Also, don't forget the nice little network status graph included on the clipboard in AH these days.  You can always screenshot that exactly at the time somebody says you are warping.

There are also some really funky things that can happen, like asymetrical routing, where one direction of your connect may be fine, but the other gets hosed.  Skuzzy is the man for this kind of thing, but you'll need to hit the Internet Connectivity forum with some good traceroute info as I mentioned above in order for him to be able to help you.

Is this the purpose of the AH "Net Status" feature? (Esc --> Set-up --> Net Status)

I have no clue what individual traces represent.  I do know that top trace needs to be in the center and the bottom trace needs to be close to the bottom.  I mostly see these lines flat line with very tiny ripples, but I might see an occasional spike at times.

If I notice some one else warping I generally check my Net Status first.  If it is fine then I assume that the other player is warping or that HTC has a problem.
