Elderly Driver Hits People at Florida Farmer's Market

Friday, July 25, 2003

FLAGLER BEACH, Fla.  — A 79-year-old man apparently lost control of his car and plowed into a northern Florida farmer's market (search) Friday, sending six people to hospitals, law officers said.

The driver blamed the accident on a stuck gas pedal, Fire Chief Jon Macdonald said.

The man was getting ready to leave the weekly market's parking lot when his car rammed three or four other vehicles, then hit the six people near a peaches and strawberry stand, Macdonald said.

Most seriously hurt was a 7-year-old girl whose leg was run over by the car. None of the six had life-threatening injuries, he said. The driver was unhurt and was released.

Police officer Frank Parrish said the driver, identified as Louis Nirenstein, was allowed to park inside the market because he uses a wheelchair.

Macdonald helped him out of the car after the crash, about 75 miles south of Jacksonville (search).

"He was coherent and talking to me. ... He was very upset that somebody got hurt," he said.

Last week, an elderly driver plowed into a farmers market outside Los Angeles, killing 10 and injuring 69.

Don't worry, Im sure the AARP is in Battle Mode, loading more local gentry into aging Buicks and filling the roads with more.

The problem in Florida is that the majority of voters are over the age of 60.

You think they'd vote for a law requiring yearly re-testing or some similar attempt to stop the madness?  I doubt it. It's sad, but true.

I often see cars in the grocery store parking lot which initially appear to be driverless, runaway vehicles. Then they cross a speed bump and I see the shock of blue hair pop up above the headrest.

A 79 year old driver in Florida just means that his daddy let him borrow the car.

gas pedal on my car got stuck fully down once.  All i had to do was put my foot down on clutch, put it in neutral and pull over.
I am not ashamed to confess that I am ignorant of what I do not know.

In the world of traffic collision investigation we call them blue-haired killers.
