I had a '91 300ZX... was a great car. But that was 5 years ago.
That style 300ZX was one of the best handling cars I've ever owned. It was well balanced and rear wheel drive... everything just seemed natural about it. Its achiles heel is its power... only 225 HP in a relatively heavy car. It could still get up and go... but there were quite a few cars out there that could put it to shame. It is, however, one of the best all-around cars ever made. Of course, it is a 2 seater (forget that 2+2 crap) and that is a major adjustment for some. The insurance is more correlated to the cost of the car than the performance... so it shouldn't be too bad.
If you are going to buy one, make sure of a few things:
- It has a serpentine timing belt that costs $$$ to change. Make sure this has been done recently (within the last 30k miles) or you will most likely want to have it done. You should do it at least every 60k miles, but its good to assume the person selling you the car is lieing and double what they tell you.
- Don't fool yourself into thinking you'll fix any problems you see. More likely than not, you won't. Those interior rattles will only get worse and those dents will never pop out. This is especially important with the interior... notably in regards to scratches and tears.
Anyways... the price is most likely affordable on that car, but I'd do some research on the costs of major repairs (tranny rebuild, engine rebuild) just to see what you might be looking at in regards to a 12 year old car.
