ok all you trout anglers I have a question for you....

 Last weekend I went on my company fishing trip down to the coast.  We fished for Specks.  The fishing was very slow on saturday but I did manage to boat about 5 trout (though I did lose at least 10 1/2 way to the boat)  Here's my question.   I noticed that most of the fight was just reeling as fast as you could to keep up with the fish because they would run right for the boat when you set the hook.  Do fresh water trout do this too?    Now these trout were small, the biggest I caught was 18.25".  I went bass fishing when I got home saturday night and caught a 4.5 lb bass, he was probably 20" or so.  He put up MUCH more of a fight and MUCH longer than any of the trout we caught.

 think I'll stick to the large mouths :D

it was a guided trip so I had no control over the sharpness of the hooks :(.  Not misses either, they were lost 1/2 way or more to the boat.  I had about 15 misses!  I think the problem was the croakers were too big for the little trout we were catching.  When I'd lose one I'd look at the bait and they always had bite marks up to the hook, but not over the hook.  So I think what was happening was they were biting the heads of the bait and their 2 front teeth would stick into the bait.  Well I'd get a little fight out of it before the teeth were able to slip out of the bait.

you mean those things they catch on tv with spider web thick line and are smaller than a good bass shiner?

used to catch bigger panfish with hotdog pieces and kite string when I was a kid :)

ps

speckled trout don't fight much pound for pound - good eating though

need to tie into a bull redfish or snook for a good fight inshore

Specks are for eating-Bull reds are for fighting.  Udie, quit doing that live bait bull****, get an ultralight reel and a speck rig, and you will have more fun and catch more trout than by using shrimp or croakers.

If you DO want to catch a big speck, wait until fall and get em in Baffin or the surf.

Spent many a morning casting plastic worms in the Laguna Madre from a 6 ft tower on my buddie's scooter.  From up there the view you get is amazing...you can see the fish you are casting to.  The water is clear enough and shallow enough that you can see the holes they are laying in and cast right on top of 'em.  Course...the redfish are more fun to fight.  Only time we ever used live bait (shrimp or shiners or croakers) was at night time.  That was cast and set the rod in the holder time.  When you got a strike you pick it up.  Usually trout would grab the bait and run and you could get em every time.  

Daytime your best bet is using plastic worms.  Colors vary by time of year and water clarity.

Friend of mine caught a 40 inch speck one day while we were wade-fishing.  handsomehunk filleted it out like it was nothing.  I would have had that thing on my wall in a heartbeat.

hey udie....

that hurricane really fubarred the fishin too...

we did a similar trip to corpus and went out in the bay areas. Man, we pulled in trout hand over fist all day...some good size ones too. We also got mixed up in some reds every now and then. one was tagged. :D

anyhow, i really think it depends on the guide, the area, the season...it's a blast if you get the good times.

and reds fight like a mofo!! (they take it easy till they see the boat, then look out baby!)

Exaxtly Gadfly....never done the fly fishing route myself, but nothing beats drifting along on the tower sight-casting to the big ones.

Hey Mason...what kind of tag did that fish have?  They used to have this thing called the STAR that ran from Memorial Day to Labor Day every summer.  There were places designated as official weigh-in stations and if you joined up and caught a big one you could take it and have it entered in the contest.  Anyway, they would release 30 tagged redfish each year (10 in lower coast, 10 in central coast and 10 in upper coast).  If you caught a tagged fish you won a boat and a truck to pull it with...or maybe a suburban.  Not too sure which.  But it was a good deal for just entering and catching a tagged fish.

Sure, Udie-My brother moved from CC and sold his boat, but I know the bays well enough that we don't need no stinkin guide(If we can get a boat).
