You may be good programmers/designers, but you suck in PR. Don't you know that the main traits in most humans are envy and love to count other people's money?
Don't you know that for many people getting a good deal is less important then knowing that others do not get a better deal?
Instead of offering a $10 discount accounts to your marketing sample, you should have offered them accounts at regular price and paid them $10 a month as members of market research focus group from your marketing buget...
That would have confused the simple-minded who think that one dollar is different from another depending whether it is part of revenue shortfall, market research expence or PR incentive.
