The Recall in California

My question is:

When I signed the recall, I lived in La Verne.  I have since moved to Bend, Oregon.  Because my signature was valid when I signed the recall, is it still good, or did I sign it uselessly?

Grey Davis also alienated a lot of democrats who re-elected him based upon his education platform.  Now, that's the first thing he wanted to cut after he was re-elected (and shortly after the re-election, the truth about the state of the economy came out...).  He really doesn't have many friends down there right now.

recalling an elected official for anything short of gross misconduct or evidence that the election was tainted is just plain stupid.  you've made your pick now put up with it until his term ends.

Read statement above about him not releasing the truth about the economy until after his re-election.  People are pissed, and they are looking to make a point.  Even if it doesn't make a huge difference, they are going to make a point that the people of California don't like Grey Davis.

The different viewpoints, from what I can gather, are this...some think this is a personal attack on Gray....while others feel that at some point, the public has the right to fire government officials that are killing the state.

I think the latter.  And I wonder if my state has such a recall clause.   Hmmmm

I think recall is a fine thing... we should be able to fire the governor if he's not doing his job.

Still, I am unconvinced that Davis is to blame. Of course, he doesn't have the luxury of being able to blame others in his administration for his current problem(s)... so what the hell... get involved... vote what you feel is right and don't be surprised if it makes absolutely no difference who's in office.

Considering the politics that Kalifornia is well known for....should this be called a Coup, rather than a recall?

In the public sector, every government agency is facing big job cuts because of the budget mess. Meanwhile, in the private sector, jobs are being lost left and right. And there is nothing strange with that, because given a choise, why would any sane company want to open a business in a state with such a punishing environment for private workers? Where would any corporate CEO look first when seeking to close plants due to high costs?

You have to create the wealth first before you bicker about sharing it. The Democrats frequently forget this inconvenient little detail.

The Democrats control 60% of the California Assembly and 60% of the Senate. They also hold all eight state elected offices. They've dominated the legislature forever, and have held the Governer's mansion for 5 years. In that time they have so botched the economy that sales tax revenue in San Francisco has fallen 50% in two years.

I'll repeat. California has the highest level of sales tax, the highest minimum wage, the most restrictive overtime rules, the highest electric rates, the largest budget deficit, the worst bond rating, and the highest worker's compensation premiums in the US. At some companies, worker's comp exceeds payroll as an expense. Talk about encouraging layoffs and discouraging employment.

If you're a business owner, what part of this is good news? How would this encourage you to expand your business? And without business expansion, how are tax revenues generated? How is unemployment brought down?

(California is a bit like Sweden in the way they are committing economical suicide)

It's also a fact that Davis manipulated the energy crisis in California for political purposes.

And as for your rather idiotic assertion that somehow Bush is to blame for California's woes is just, well, idiotic.  Davis brought this upon himself, otherwise almost half the signatures on the recall petition wouldn't have been Democrats.  While Davis can't be blamed for a part of the current economic problems we're facing here in California, he still can be blamed for not helping matters or improving it.  The current budget and deficit problems are his fault, as well putting out of work a great deal of our teachers in this state while he rewards his political contributors by letting them keep their jobs.  It's funny how the groups that didn't support Davis were the first ones to suffer from his cut backs.

While I didn't sign the recall petition and really don't support it (I think it will do more harm to California's economy than helping it) I don't blame the rest of the residents of the Union's greatest state for wanting the little midget out of office.  If only the moronic goose-stepping, jack boot wearing, far-right whacko California conservatives had supported Riordon instead of that totally incompetent Simon as their choice for the Republican candidate, then we wouldn't be facing a recall election.  Have the Republicans learned their lessons?  Nope, they are backing that idiot Issa so it looks like that even after we get rid of Davis, we'll still have a Democrat in the Governor's Mansion for some years to come.

Davis enjoys support of big Democratic majorities in both houses of the Legislature, state law requires the budget to be approved by two-thirds. Republicans have enough votes to hold up the process indefinitely.
Maybe this is the problem?

Davis negotiated idiotic energy contracts, paying top dollar for future engery needs. That pretty much doomed California's economy all by itself.

See, Kalifornia has the brilliant concept that engery companies have to buy power at unregulated market prices, then are forced to sell it at capped prices in Kalifornia.... sort of Soviet style . So then you have power companies going bankrupt selling power below the market cost... so brilliant :)

Davis then complained that California shouldn't have to pay the agreed price, after energy prices dropped around the country. Too bad he made a deal that sucked, oh well.

He now thinks the answer is to tax the watermelon out of everyone to make up for his spending. He is a joke that needs too and will be shown the door.

Glad I don't live there :)
